Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience and help them understand why bullying is an issue.

Thesis: Bullying is a serious problem in our society today. The victims of bullying are not the problem, the bullies are.

Introduction: I will never forget one of the times, yes I only said one of the times, I was bullied in high school. I went to Mc Donald’s with a friend for lunch and had a salad. After we got back to school, I went to my locker to get my books for my next class. As I opened my locker, a note fell out. I opened it and it read “I know you went to McDonald’s but how much did you eat?” Every time I was bullied in high school, it was related to my body image and to this day, I still tend to struggle with it, just not as much. The answer is simple, they bully so they don’t have to deal with their own problems, which is taking the “easy way out”, according to James Lehman who has a master in Social work. Bullies have not learned how to deal with their own problems, so they take it out on others. One source of bullying is at home. If children are seeing their mom, dad, brother, sister, or even aunts or uncles bullying people, that is how they learn to bully. Bullies use aggression, violence and even verbal abuse. They don’t learn how to solve their problems, so they just threaten other children instead. What does an aggressive bully look like you might ask? Too many adults seem to think that bullying is just part of being a kid, but it isn’t, and it has a negative and sometimes long lasting effect on others. Bullying Statistics show that “Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it.” What some people do not realize is that there are many different types of bullying that include physical bullying, emotional bullying, sexting, and cyberbullying. There are many warning signs of suicide. Depression, interest in death or dying, engaging in harmful activities (e.g. substance abuse, reckless behavior, and self-injury), giving away personal possessions, saying goodbye to people, and making comments about how life would be better off without them.
