Leadership, as defined by Organizational Behaviour: Understanding and Managing Life at Work, is “the influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context” . Leadership is commonly held as a key component of any organization, be it in the private or public sector, and is often seen as the reason for successes achieved by an organization. Despite this however, it is also possible for an argument to be made that the presence of leadership can lead to a declination in company effectiveness, and ultimately lead to widespread failure in an organization. The main cause that allows for both these statements to be considered true is the fact that leadership stems from the ability of the leader to …show more content…
This can not only be applied to observable physical phenomena, but also to the study of leadership in the field of organizational behaviour. This can be seen in all major leadership failures in all organizations. The main cause of leadership failures in organizations stem from the improper application of leadership theories for certain situations. One considerable example of this failure can be seen in the application of leadership punishment behaviour. In general, leadership punishment behaviour can be a method to increase performance in an organization if the punishment being applied is contingent to behaviour, however the biggest issue with this form of behavioural leadership is that punishment is difficult to apply in an organizational context, and often times is mistakenly applied non-contingently, resulting in an overall decrease in job satisfaction on the part of the employee. This can be seen everywhere, including our own College in cases where cadets receive punishments at random with no reasoning behind their punishment, merely that their name had been passed up for some unknown offence. Speaking from personal experience this is truly dissatisfying and allows for no room for the subordinate to address the mystery issue and better themselves as a cadet. Another example of in which inappropriate application of leadership techniques by managers can lead to the failure of an organization to
The topic of leadership has been explored and written about by thousands of authors who are considerably more qualified than I am to write about the subject. However, I’ve always maintained that developing, evolving and articulating one’s own leadership philosophy is an essential part of a professional’s growth. Through academics and experience, I’ve concluded that leadership is a “soft” skill, more art than science, and that leadership principles can be universally applied. As a topic of discussion, leadership can be ambiguous and seldom does everyone agree on a single definition. Organizations and the people they consist of crave leadership, even if not overtly. Undeniably, strong leadership is essential to achieving
Leadership is defined as the action of guiding an individual or group of people. Effective leaders shape the behavior and thought process of the individuals around them. As a result, the success of an organization is often impacted by the leadership style and approach of its leaders. Even when engaging with multiple people, impactful leaders maintain their own style of leadership but occasionally change their approach based on the motivational needs of each individual. However, regardless of the style, leadership within an organization is designed to drive the performance of their employees and it is done through proficient communication. This guidance influences the culture of an organization, which subsequently, helps to shape its leaders.
Leaders who fail to provide true and proper command, inspiration, motivation, and strategic vision for their company leave a battered organization. An incompetent or dysfunctional leadership team misleads others which results in poor performance for individuals and organizations, which leads to a failed business. leadership theories all help leaders to lead followers in a productive way preventing this increasing effectiveness and give leaders ways to help followers with paths to follow to reach goals for both organization outcomes as well as individuals.

Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
The style of leadership is very task orientated. Therefore, it would be easy to establish goals and quotas for followers to target in order to achieve higher levels of pay, promotions, or incentives. For example, a restaurant manager may design a contest in his or her restaurant that can reward the highest seller a bonus. This type of leadership has many avenues to inspire employees by rewarding them. Equally, with rewards however, they can come with punishment. Leaders are able to have measurable result that can also have consequences.
To be an authentic leader one must discover their True North and the purpose of leadership. Leadership decides the success or failure of organizations. The chief cause of organizational failure for the last decade has been failed leadership. A leader’s
A leader that uses this approach relies on their own knowledge to manage employees and situations using poer and control (Fradsen, 2014). These leaders are the ones who will use negative reinforcement and punishment to punish you for bad performance or to enforce the rules. McGuire and Kennery (2006) define the behaviors of a transactional leader as being punitive, giving contingent rewards, managing by active exception, or managing by passive
Leaders are the individuals who help to create options and opportunities. They help in identifying the choices and solve the problems. They build commitment and coalitions. Leaders do this by inspiring others and working along with them to construct the shared vision of the possibilities and commitments of a better group, organization or community. They engage the followers in such a way that most of the followers become leaders in their own right. The variety of demands of an increasingly complex world very often require that leadership be shared by most of the members of an organization, in appropriate ways for different situations. Within leadership, there is the opportunity for many issues in itself. Leadership styles and practices, one of the most vital aspects determining productivity in organizations, is truly what sets the standard for every level of management within a company. If a proper leadership style is not chosen and followed to lead a team within an organization, there will be no one to follow and the team will certainly not be successful. The repercussions of poor leadership will certainly make a drastic difference in a company. This can include the needs of not only employees, but
Leader should have the shared responsibility and collaborative quality. For example, instead of making the strategy alone, he will gather the idea of all brilliant workers to increase the productivity of the organisation.
Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Leadership is leading a group of people or company to reach a result or further and the organization. A leader is supposed to be an example of how all employees are expected to act and what they should be striving for. Good leaders also don’t use their position within a company to take advantage of the company and its employees. A good leader is supposed to be able to perform their job with high standards, efficiency, and honor. However, for every good leader, there are bad leaders and the worse the leader the more detrimental he or she becomes to employees and the company they run. Poor leadership skills can ultimately ruin a company 's chance of success. The attitude
A leader sets the tone for those they supervise. Having a weak or ineffective leadership style turns what could be a productive organization into one that lacks direction, is chaotic, and fails to live up to its potential. Incompetent central leadership can also cause a power struggle amongst the other remaining team members. Groups seek leadership; when leaders fail to use their powers others will maneuver to use the power left in the void. This can lead to a power-struggle and backstabbing (Morgan, 2007).
Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions. This paper states my points in which I duly believe, justifies the importance of an outstanding leader in any organization.
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power. Based on the definition of leadership, anyone can be considered a leader as long as they have the ability to influence people to achieve a particular result or goal which benefits the organization or group as a whole. Individuals with a secure sense of self and understanding, acceptance of diversity within an organization tend to be the strongest leaders that not only make others want to follow, but they also encourage other leaders to gravitate to their
