On the day of November 6, 1860 Abraham Lincoln became our nation’s 16th president. During his time in office one of the nations most talked about wars occurred, The Civil War. The civil war began on April 12, 1861 and lasting till May 9, 1865. The civil war was between the Union States and the states of the Confederacy. The war was caused by many reasons like trade, slavery, and states’ rights. During the civil war Approximately 620,000 soldiers died between the Union States and the states of the Confederacy. The Civil War left many impacts on both the Union States and the states of the Confederacy. Many believe the war help lead to slavery being banned. The civil war also brought great things as well. On the day of July 21, 1861 The Battle of Bull Run occurred, ending on the same day. The Unions states general Irvin McDowell gave in to great pressure to begin campaigning before his men’s 90-day enlistments expired. During this battle at first it seemed as if the Union Army was going to defeat the Confederate States forces. However, the battle had a turning point for the Confederate States when Joseph E. Johnston took command. The un-organized Union army then would collapse under pressure resulting in retreat. Not only was the Union Army un-organized, but the Confederate Forces where just as exhausted and un-organized.
