Cause and Effects There are over 2.7 million students being bullied in the U.S. each year of those 2.1 million are the bullies (Stats 2010). Bullying takes place in schools, on the internet (cyber bullies) at work even in our homes and communities. It could be a teacher or a classmate, your friend on social media or an enemy that uses that forum to attack you. A bully can be your boss, a coworker, your child, your husband, your sibling or a parent it can even be your neighbor. Bullies attack anyone and everyone. They do not discern between male or female, young or old, sick or healthy. While this may be true, it does not prevent the abuse. Recognizing warning signs of bullying can help victims receive aid and support. Some signs of bullying can be frequent or unexplained injuries as well as physical ailments such as headaches and stomach aches or even faking illness (HHS n.d. ). Often times warning signs are hidden because the victim is unsure how to handle the situation. They may feel ashamed and embarrassed or afraid of retaliation. There might be pressure to keep quiet or they might be concerned they will not be believed (Gordon 2015). Many victims choose to keep silent about being bullied for these reasons. However, internalizing their feelings can lead to negative results, including effects on mental health (HHS n.d.). Victims are susceptible to substance abuse and in some cases suicide. In June of this year Jonathan M. Wesener took his life because as he told his parents in a file recorded on his phone he had suffered through devastating bullying at school. None of those closest to him — not his family members, school administrators, coaches or friends — knew anything was wrong (Welter 2015). Furthermore the LGBT community is at a greater risk of harassment. A study conducted in 2007 by GLSEN indicated 9 out 10 were harassed at school. It clearly shows that the effects of bullying go deep into the communities as well as showing that some adults are clueless in how to deal with the issue and the repercussions. This film was also used as an advocacy tool against bullying, as such it facilitated an anti-bullying movement.“The BULLY Project” this is a social action campaign that has started a national movement against bullying.
