Students’ perception of English National Examination.
The washback of English National Examination brought some opinion from the students. Overall, all of the students agreed with National Examination. They agreed National Examination used as graduation determiner and a benchmark for Indonesian education level. Compared to paper-based type, they preferred Computer-Based type for National Examination it is more simple, quicker, and easier. The students also agreed that English still has to be one of the subjects on National Examination because they were sure that with English National Examination, they could boost their English skills improvement. They had different reasons why they study hard for National Examination. The students’ motive for study in preparing ENE was because they wanted to graduate with maximal score. It was the reason why the students tried their best to study hard. According to the students, they study because they realized that they need to do it. It was true because all of the students agreed that they study for National Examination due to their own will. Moreover, they were supported by their parents who always motivate them to study. Their other motive to study for National Examination was because they felt bad if they get lower score than their classmates. Furthermore, the students’ motives to study English National Examination were because English was their favourite subjects. They also did it because they were sure that English will be important for their future so in short they study for English National Examination because they completely realize that they need to study it.
Talking about students’ interest toward English, from the study it can be concluded that almost all of the students like English. They like to watch English movies, listen and sing English songs, and read English books for improving their vocabularies. From all of the students participate in this study, almost all of them increase their time to study. They also did it by their own, without any command from their parents. They did because they realize and conscious that they need to study to prepare themselves in facing National Examination. In short, the students were not afraid of National Examination anymore. It is proven with the data that shows all of the students want National Examination to be held again in the next year. They did it because they agree National Examination used as benchmark for Indonesian education level and they also sure that National Examination was able to not only helped them boost their English skills’ improvement but also measured their English skills as
