This counselor met with Morgan and Barb Seidel with Career Directions at Morgan's Macomb Mall worksite on 12/5/17. Barb has been working with Morgan to identify her strengths and explore areas of employment that will be a good fit for her given her disabilities and barriers. Barb started off by reviewing the testing that she did with Morgan. Barb informed this counselor that she already reviewed the results with Morgan's grandparents on 11/16. She stated that they didn't have any questions, issues, or concerns with the testing. Barb then went over the results with this counselor. Morgan was given the WRAT-R and her scores were as follows: word reading 2.8, sentence comprehension 2.2, math 1.4, and spelling 10.8 (although Barb is recalculating this score). Morgan also took an interest inventory. Her interests included: animal care, horticulture (cutting grass/greenhouse work), and housekeeping. As Morgan has several interests, Barb spoke with this counselor about her next steps with Morgan. Barb provided this counselor with a copy of Morgan's visual resume and types resume for her file. All diseases and disorders are categorized by a set of symptoms, or signs that are indicative of certain diseases or disorders. Thus, symptoms are important when diagnosing a person. They serve as a communication tool between the clinical psychologist and the client. When detecting symptoms of a person, it allows the clinician to understand the client’s physical, emotional, and mental discomforts. When contacting the manager in regards to setting up an interview, he portrayed himself as an open-minded and reasonable employer who stated that he has hired individuals with disabilities in the past. Hearing this news helped me formulate my decision to analyze Gateway Inn and the housekeeping position the company offers.
Rosa Lee Cunningham is a 52-year old African American female. She is 5-foot-1-inch, 145 pounds. Rosa Lee is married however, is living separately from her husband. She has eight adult children, Bobby, Richard, Ronnie, Donna (Patty), Alvin, Eric, Donald (Ducky) and one child who name she did not disclose. She bore her eldest child at age fourteen and six different men fathered her children. At Rosa Lee’s recent hospital admission to Howard University Hospital emergency room blood test revealed she is still using heroin. Though Rosa Lee recently enrolled in a drug-treatment program it does not appear that she has any intention on ending her drug usage. I was blessed to have the opportunity to interview LaToya Knight, she is a hard-working human service professional with two jobs. She works in a hospital setting as a social worker at JFK Hospital North in the Psychiatric and Behavior Health Department and is a school guidance counselor at Renaissance Charter School. With the privilege of inquiring two different human service professions permitted more in-depth insight which helped shaped career perspective and gained great amount of knowledge and wisdom through her work experience. In conjunction both jobs assist and compliment each other and has distinguish specific responsibilities and services offered.
Kathryn was looking at the kittens when she asked if they were still hiring. She didn’t see the look of extreme confusion and disbelief on the store owner/manager’s face. The counseling session began with the introductions where I introduced myself as the counselor and later introduced my client. This stage is important in any counseling session since it is the time of exploration and focusing according to Gerard Egan as quoted by Wright (1998) in his essay on couselling skills. It is in this session that I was able to establish rapport and trust with my client in order to come up with a working and fruitful relationship with him. During this stage I made use of skills like questioning, where I would pose a question directly to my client, sometimes I would choose to just listen to what the client wanted to speak out while in some instances I would be forced to paraphrase the question if I felt the client did not understand the question I had asked previously. There were also other times when I would reflect through silence. During such a period, I got time to study the client and the information he had given. This being a difficult area, since some clients may not be able to volunteer information to you as the counselor, I decided to assure the client of confidentiality of any information he was willing to share with me with a few exceptions which I also told him about. Being open to him about the only times the information may not be confidential was part of my building rapport and establishing trust with him. I therefore, decided to ask the client what information he wanted to share with me and lucky enough he was ready to speak to me about different issues that he was going through.
Connie demonstrates the importance of human relationships. Now that she is the mature adulthood stage of life, these relationships hold more meaning. Connie does not have children, so her extended family provides the support her biological children would have provided. I believe the network of associates, friends, and family members help to reinforce her positive way of thinking by providing her with enriching memories and interactions. This mixture of people and interests help her to stay relevant and in tune with the times. Her willingness to assist me further demonstrates an investment in relationships that is commendable. I cannot help but think that her ease of conversation which was witty, funny, and timely is in part because her relationships help her to remain relevant. The case study involving Dr. Robert Smith and his patients is a very intense, yet gruesome study that involves much analysis. When you first hear about amputating completely healthy limbs, it's deemed as a very bizarre request. For most people with common sense, you would think that people who want to do that are crazy and shouldn't be allowed to. However, looking further into why a person may want that done can change your judgement. In this case regarding Dr. Smith, he was okay with performing operations on his patients no matter how strange the situation was. Although Dr. Smith had already done two procedures, he was stopped from doing a third amputation from the hospital board. I believe that the hospital board was not morally justified in their decision to refuse permission for Dr. Smith to perform a third amputation for several reasons involving bioethics.
To begin the lecture, Professor Michael Sandel gave the students a scenario. The scenario was as follows: there is a trolley car that has no breaks and is heading down track. At the end of this track are five workingmen and all would be killed if the trolley car ran into them. However, there is another track going off one side where there is only one worker that would also die if the trolley car hit him or her. So, he asked his students which option would be the better one, continue toward the five workers and kill them all, or spare their lives and turn the trolley car down the other track and kill the one worker. He took a poll by raised hands to see what option most of the students would chose. The majority of the students chose to turn the trolley car and kill the one worker rather than keep the trolley going straight and kill the five workers. Some students shared their thought processes in why they made that decision before the speaker moved on to the next scenario (The Moral Side of Murder”).
In life, our journey does not always happen the way in which we anticipated it to happen. For me that was truer than ever during these last six months. Part of the unforeseen process was changing where I was conducting my internship obligations at. I officially started working as a business intern at the Phoenixville Area Community Services (PACS) on Wednesday, January 20th after meeting and talking through a quasi-interview process with Executive Director Ms. Carol Berger in early January. As the name implies, PACS is located in Phoenixville, just west of the Schuylkill River on Church Street. I was able to acquire this internship with the help and support of my wonderful Mom, who collaboratively works with Carol (an MSW herself) to place Social Work students from Eastern into internships at PACS.
Counselor met with Pt. his monthly individual session. Counselor started the session greeting him and asking him about his recovery progress. Pt. is progressing well in his tx plan and marinating his sobriety since entering the program. Pt. explained that he has never received an administrative taper for financial noncompliance since his admission. Counselor and Pt. discussed the requirements to move to Phase 6 of tx program. Counselor explained that he is currently in phase 4 and he can’t skip phase 5. Pt. informed this writer that it will beneficial for him to increase his take home privileges because he can accept a job with demanding hours.
