English Protest Assignment

The protest I have chosen to analyse is displayed in a cartoon format. Cartoons are a visual text type that predominantly use pictures and images, with very little or no words.
The features of this text type include pictures, colour, and bold eye catching text. Cartoons can have captions and often contain symbolism. This particular cartoon uses a simple, coloured, drawn picture and basic text to draw the audiences attention, symbolism is also utilised with the use of the manacles and boulder. Therefore just by viewing this cartoon it is clear and easy to identify what text type has been used.

The issue that is being protested against in this cartoon is the pay gap between male and female athletes in sport. The focal point of this cartoon in particular is the wage bias female American soccer players are facing. The evidence supporting this theory is that the girl is wearing a shirt with the words “U.S Women’s Soccer” printed on the back and the weight that is attached to her leg is labelled as “Wage Bias”. The weight chained to the girl’s leg symbolises the restrictions and struggles female athletes are facing due to the wage inequality that they are currently experiencing. In the corner of the text there is the signature of Jimmy Margulies, an award winning cartoonist based in Brooklyn, New York City. This cartoon would most likely be included in a New York publication such as a newspaper. This also supports the idea that the main audience of this text could live in the state of New York, which is also very passionate about sports.
