The organism Branta canadensis (Canada goose) exhibits a variety of adaptations to enhance its ability to survive and reproduce. One such trait is the anatomy of the bird’s eye, which “[has] an outer…membrane that… is white and fluffy” and “serves” several important functions (Herrmann, 2016, p. 76). On the one hand, the structure “protects… the eyes of the Canada goose” from being damaged “when it is asleep” (Herrmann, 2016, p. 76). On the other hand, its color prevents predators from approaching a sleeping goose and harming it, as the eyes appear open and watchful, even when they are closed (Herrmann, 2016, p. 76). The utility of this adaptation in terms of the Canada goose’s survival is clear: if the Canada goose lacked this adaptation, it would be more likely to fall prey to other animals while it is vulnerably sleeping, and its ability to produce the maximum number of offspring possible would be compromised. This is a morphological adaptation, as it relates to the …show more content…
79- 80). The structure of the feet, moreover, “distribute the weight of a Canada goose and prevent it from sinking” when it is standing on marshy or soft land (Herrmann, 2016, p. 80). Finally, “the webbing between the three front toes of a Canada goose” improve its ability to move effectively through water (Herrmann, 2016, p. 78). Consequently, the evolutionary efficacy of the webbed feet adaptation is clear, as it improves on the goose’s ability to survive while it is in the air, on land, and on water. Like their eyelid structure, this would be considered a morphological trait, for its correlation between the bird’s anatomy and its
The four-pointed forkbird has the best suited evolutionary fitness. By the end of the activity, there were only two two-pointed forkbirds, one one-pointed forkbirds, and seventeen four-pointed forkbirds. This shows that four-pointed forkbirds have a better chance of surviving and passing on their traits.
Alex Johnson wrote a short story “How to Queer Ecology: One Goose at a Time” that revolved around the idea of human and nature. Spoke about how the two are connected where sexuality, culture and science are part of the seven steps to queer ecology. Johnson asked questions such as “Where is the line between what is Nature and what is Human? Do I spend equal times in the parking lot and the forest? Can I really say the parking lot is separate from the forest? What if I end up staying in the parking lot the whole time? What if it has been a long drive and I really have to pee?” allowing the readers to not only consume information but cross-examine what the readers have read. Before reading the short story I always believe there was a slight line
In conclusion, owls have shown they are excellent at adapting to any environment by the ability to fly silently to stalk prey. They use camouflaged and insulated feathers to hide and keep warm while hunting. Owl’s excellent binocular vision, and hearing helps to track prey from long distances. The only real risk of extinction of the burrowing owl is if people continue to kill off animals that dig holes for them. They have shown the ability to survive for a long time with the help of other animals digging holes for them. Owl’s will continue to evolve long after humans have
Lessons about teamwork can be learned from geese. As each goose flaps its wings it creates"uplift" for the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds greater flying range than if each bird flew alone. When a goose falls out of formation, it immediately feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it. When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies to the point position. While flying in formation, geese honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. When a goose gets sick or wounded, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. They launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock (Lessons on Teamwork from Geese, 1999).
Canadian Lynx are in the same family and are about the same size of the average bobcat, even though most of the time a bobcat weighs more than a Lynx. The size of their feet is a big difference however, and are not proportioned to their weight. A Lynx has much larger feet and legs than a Bobcat. They are mostly found further North than a bobcat as well, which means its feet must have evolved to walk in snow year round. A Lynx looks like an oversized house cat with thick fur, and giant feet and when its feet land the toes spread way out. Both of these evolved traits help a Lynx’s feet

The Canadian Constitution, is the supreme law of the land, has evolved countless of times throughout history. Within this paper, I will focus on two vital dates: The Constitution Act of 1867 and 1982. Canada’s Constitution Act is made up of written laws (statutes), conventions and Canadian court decisions (Mcconnell, W. H. 2015). The Constitution Act of 1867, was formerly known as the British North American Act (NBA), together with amendments made to it since enacted, became the Constitution Act of 1982. Immigration is one of the few areas covered in the Constitution that gives both federal legislators and provincial legislators to enact laws.
The Wood Duck itself is an amazingly colorful breed of duck ranging in many colors. The amazing thing about this breed is that the males and females differ drastically from their appearance. The males are more brightly colored with a dark body with bright red all over. Whereas the female is more plainer with more gray and blue. You can always tell if it s female and more importantly a female Wood Duck by seeing a distinct white ring around the eyes. When both male and females are in full wing spread the outer parts show as if there is an aluminum coloring which only o...
The term ‘diversity ‘refers to all of the significant differences between people, including perceptions of differences that need to be considered in particular situations and circumstances such as our thinking styles or beliefs and value (managing cultural diversity) .A population is made of several different people and therefore they have their own unique cultures which create huge impact on the society and the workplace of a particular country. Society is becoming more diverse due to increased cross-border mobility, less-rigid gender roles, improved living standards and individualization processes. Canada has one of the most diverse population as it can be analyze from the fact that One out of five people in Canada 's population is foreign-born (statistic Canada). Every one living in Canada is a stakeholder that contributes towards the cultural diversity in
The platypus is covered with a thick water-resistant fur, excluding its bill and feet. It’s body it streamlined, has short limbs and webbed forefeet to propel itself through water using an alternative kicking motion. The webs on the for...
Many events have occurred in my life, although a few have changed my life to how it is today. Growing up I realized how moving to Canada, coming to Milton and getting a baby sister are moments which have had a significant impact on my life. They showed me a completely different atmosphere, got my work recognized and made me more mature, thus, helping me get countless new opportunities and responsibilities.
In separate studies, researchers Daniel Ksepka and Daniel Thomas noticed that the penguin fossils showed grooves on their humerus. These grooves were signs of a humeral arterial plexus—a penguin’s form of thermoregulation. The system of arteries and veins in their flippers ensured that warm blood cooled down by the time
The platypus is among the nature´s most unlikely animals. Its scientific name is Ornithorhynchus anatinus, which in Greek means “duck-like”. The body and the tail of this mammal are covered with waterproof, thick, brown fur which works to trap air and keep itself warm. It has webbed feet and a snout, which are characteristics that can also be found in a duck, thus many people relate them. One of the rare characteristics that this animal has is that its webbing, found in the front feet more significantly than the back ones, folds back when walking on land. The snout of the platypus, unlike the peak of a bird, is a sensory organ that has the mouth and nostrils, leaving the eyes and ears are located just back from it.
