Subject: Why the development of a BYOD policy is important and what measures it should contain?

Due to the growing trend of portable devices that are now affordable to everyone we need to examine the issue of BYOD. BYOD is Bring Your Own Device which means employees bring smart phones, tablets, flash drives, laptops, and the like to work. While these devices can be of use to the company they also bring with them added problems. The also represent the possibility of lowering cost on equipment and for IT services.

• It is not as easy to lock some portable devices as it is on a PC
• Wireless communication on devices can be intercepted jeopardizing information this can be mitigated by encryption and limiting signal strength outside of the business.
• Increased issue for our IT department due to the number of devices that can have sensitive or access to sensitive information.
• Increased issue for our IT due to device compatibility IOS and Droid OS may not be able to integrate with our system easily.
Liabilities:
• Due to the sensitive nature of information in today’s world we run the risk of incurring fines or penalties for not securing information.
• BYOD opens more avenues for potential issues if someone loses their phone and that phone is connected to our network that gives a hacker an opportunity to steal
