Beowulf: An Epic Hero
Beowulf is an incredibly strong, loyal, and brave hero. To prove his strength he fought treacherous monsters to stop the mayhem and fear that they had been spreading. He was very loyal to the king, never turning his back to him, and always fighting in valiant battles for him proving his extreme loyalty to a king that does not even rule over him. Beowulf shows his bravery by fighting monsters that other heroes refuse to fight because they know death only awaits them if they even attempt. He is not scared of these monsters and he always fights bravely and vigorously, to earn his honor and glory as a hero. Beowulf is an epic hero through his incredible strength, his loyalty, and his bravery.

Beowulf fights battles for the people, his people, he has no fears of loss or death because he knows it comes for every person and if it is his time then he can not prevent it from happening. At a certain point in the story a treacherous thief stole the riches from a terrifying fire-breathing dragon; once Beowulf found out the dragon was wreaking havoc on his people even in his old age he was still brave enough to stand up for his people and fight the fire-breathing dragon to protect them. Beowulf sets out with not a fear in the world to battle this dragon showing how truly brave he is. When he gets to the fire-breathing dragons lair he knows there’s a chance he could die but still fights, he ends up getting help from someone in his kingdom named Wiglaf and together they both defeat the dragon but not before Beowulf is mortally wounded by the dragon, by getting bitten in the neck and starts to slowly bleed out. He does not fear his death, which is swiftly approaching but has one last wish which is to see the treasure he fought for and earned. After his death, a monument is built in his favor where he was buried in while adorned in the dragon's treasure. His people went around proclaiming his bravery to the world because he fought without a fear, he fought terrifying monsters and was accepting of death that could have ambushed him at any time. He is able to use his super-human physical strength and courage to put his people before himself. He encounters many monsters and horrible beasts, but he never fears the threat of death. What is a hero, that is a question many have asked for ages. According to Joseph Campbell, a hero is someone that goes through a number of steps in what he calls the Hero’s Journey. In the poem of Beowulf, author unknown and translated by Burton Raffel, the main character Beowulf plays the part of hero, taking on his own Hero’s Journey. In his poem Beowulf goes through many of the steps listed out by Joseph Campbell, such as crossing the threshold and the belly of the whale.
