McGrath uses many different similes and metaphors throughout the chapter in order to make the understanding of the Trinity a lot more accessible.
McGrath puts forward the idea that ‘if you can get your head around God, it’s not God and you can’t fully grasp God’. He uses this quote to back up his idea that Christians must not ‘reduce God to their own level’ but to ‘expand their minds in order to understand him’(90). God is not supposed to be straight forward and easy to understand but rather something that is far beyond the human mind and requires a lot more thought and time in order to comprehend it.
McGrath also states that ‘God is above gender’ (93). McGrath says that god is neither a male nor a female and the idea of the ‘Father, Son and Holy Spirit’ is too masculine in terms of defining the Trinity and God. The Trinity is used to remind Christians that ‘God stands outside this linguistic limitation’ and that this is why God can ‘enter into a relationship’ just like any man or woman
