I chose nutritionist as my profession. A nutritionist helps people use their diet and the nutritional properties of food to make their bodies perform better. Nutritionists also use food to manage disease by advising patients what to eat. Most nutritionists work in hospitals or other clinical settings. Many food companies employ nutritionists as well in order to keep their products up to nutritional standards. Nutritionists earn an average of $59,000 per year and the job outlook is expected to grow by 16% in the next decade which is much faster than average jobs. This is partially due to the rise in obesity and related illness. Becoming a nutritionist requires a bachelor’s degree and a supervised training period. Listening and problem solving are also useful qualities to consider when becoming a nutritionist. Most of the day to day requirements of being a nutritionist involve dealing with people and communicating information to them. Having good people skills is very helpful in those types of situations. The career also requires patience because a lot of the times, patients simply just won’t listen to your advice because it’s difficult. Listening is one of the most important skills when it comes to being a nutritionist. Listening to the patients and hearing their questions, concerns, fears, and reservations will give insight in how best to help them. Problem solving is a great quality to have as a nutritionist because problems will be presented every day. One of the main ways it can help me achieve my goals is through networking with other health professionals that have graduated from Kaplan. Networking is one of the best ways to find people that share the same vision and goals. I look forward to using Kaplan’s Career Service Center in the future. In five years, I plan to be working in the healthcare field somewhere. My goals that I have right now may not be the same goals that I have in six months, much less five years. I’ve always been the type to never really be satisfied with settling down. In the past five years, I’ve lived in three different states and two countries so who knows what the next five years will hold. I’ve often considered getting out of the military and moving to New York City and just trying my hand at my own version of the American dream. Basically, I said all of that to say, I have no clue where I see myself in five years. In conclusion, I have always been interested in nutrition and hope that it works out as a career path. The way food has such a massive impact on the body is one of the coolest things about life to me. Teaching others and helping them change their lives and make themselves better always brings me joy.
