What are the differences between basketball and soccer? Both are ball games and team sports, but they are different in some ways. There are three main differences between soccer and basketball. They are the way they use the ball, the number of players, and the positions. Firstly, these two sports are different in the way they use the ball. In both sports, players dribble and shoot the ball. But basketball players dribble with their hands, while soccer players, except the goalkeeper, dribble with their feet. Types of passing are also really important in a soccer game. There are three types of passing: direct passing, short passing, and long passing. However, a good soccer team usually uses a mixture of them. Moreover, defending is also a key tactic for the game. There are lots of different shapes of defending, for example, man mark, zonal (players defend their own territory), and straight line. Offside traps usually apply in a straight line defending. Thus, it makes straight line defending really strong but highly risky. Unlike soccer, in football a win is largely determined by the skills of the players in a team, not by the team formation. There were also differences in other fields of tactics between soccer and football. In contrast to short passes in soccer, long passes is more likely used in football. Whereas there is not much different in team instruction, types of defending are totally different between soccer and football. "Man mark" or "Man to Man" is always used in a football game.
While the length and width of the courts are the same between the two, the three-point line is four feet farther from the basket in the NBA. The NBA’s three-point line also consists of a straight line on both sides leading to a semicircle, whereas the NCAA’s three-point line is simply a semicircle with ends on the baselines. For example the NBA plays four twelve minute quarters with a break at the half but on the other hand the NCAA plays two twenty minute halves. Shortly after that the basketball net was invented. It was used so that the ball could go through the hoop and at the same time slow down the shot so that the ball didn’t fly too far away. Another example is the alternation of a team’s offense and defense in football as opposed to the simultaneous effort of the offense and defense in soccer. These differences in rules, rituals, and concepts distinguish these two sports from each other. However, there are similarities, such as the fact that both sports allow eleven players on each team to play on the field at a time. Also, the area where one scores is in the same locations in both sports, the end zones of football and the goals of soccer are on opposite sides of the field.
