An autopsy is a highly specialized and time consuming surgical procedure to determine the cause of death in a person. They use autopsies to determine the death of your local shoe store owner all the way to highly famous people such as Michael Jackson. The doctor that does this procedure is known as a pathologist. To start the internal examination you have to place a rubber brick, often called a "body block", under the victims back which causes the head and arms to fall down off of the table. The reason this block is placed under the body is to make it easier to make the cuts and incisions needed to perform the autopsy. The first incision can be made in either 3 different ways. The first option is a large, deep Y cut from each shoulder down the middle of the chest until it reaches the sternum. The second option is a T shaped cut going directly across the shoulders and also extending down to the sternum. The last option is a simple vertical cut starting a the neck (Adams apple in a male) and extending to the, you guessed it, sternum. After this process is complete there is very minimal bleeding. Shears, a large pair of scissors, are then used to cut open the chest through the incision made in the earlier process. A bone saw is what cuts through the ribs on the side so the pathologist can remove the sternum and ribs as on plate all connected. This is done so you can observe the heart and lungs.
