After watching these six videos I was very intrigued by the varieties of behaviors and abilities each individual had that follow the criteria with Autism Spectrum Disorder. There was a wide range of behaviors from small motions of fidgeting to self inflicting behaviors of head banging. Some of the individuals were nonverbal young children that displayed concrete behaviors that are very common with the criteria used to diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorder. Then some of the other individuals were very high functioning and able to explain themselves down to how they process information around them. Ian was in a constant repetitive motion at all times during the video. He was tracking his shadow, dancing with verbal reminders, flapping and twisting his arms, constantly touching the chair, making minimal sounds, shaking his head, and barely responded to his name or verbal directions. According to the DSM-5 Diagnostic Criteria (2013), he displayed repetitive motor hand movements, visual fascination with his own shadow moving on the floor, and displayed continuous repetition of his actions around the room. These are all symptoms of the diagnostic criteria associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Both of the girls explained how it affects them from their perspective, helping others better understand their views on it. According to Asperger Autism Spectrum Education Network (2017), individuals diagnosed are likely to have difficulties with social interaction. They also can have sensory issues with sounds around them in their environment, and will respond to situations differently than others. The young women diagnosed with Aspergers was able to explain the positives and negatives to her syndrome, including that she was able to be a loyal and logical friend to others when needed. She also explained that everyone tends to have a special area of expertise that they have a high amount of knowledge in. Her interest was music from a young age, and she said it calmed her down as well. The individual that was high functioning was able to express what she disliked to others in social situations, but still displays many characteristics found in the DSM-5.
