The Apple Truck

Art is an incredible instrument used to display emotion, connection, depth, and more. Vincent Van Gogh once said, “I dream my painting and I paint my dream” (Van Gogh). When visiting Tullahoma Fine Arts Center, I observed and surveyed many different works of art. I was attracted to a few, but the one I enjoyed most is called, “Apple Truck”, painted by Dennis Albtski. The painting is a rather simple painting, with an old and worn truck sitting in the snow on a cold dreary afternoon. The sky is filled with dark and heavy clouds, creating a gloomy sentiment. The overall disposition of the painting is quiet and peaceful, almost as if the apple truck has completed its task and the work is complete for the day.

I chose this watercolor because it drew me in when I saw the truck immediately. In my life, my truck has seen the wonderful, joyous times in my life, as well as the times that my life was dark like the heavy-clouded sky in the painting. A truck is a quiet companion who stays with you throughout all your days, and in this painting, until it is too old and rusty to drive any longer. The intrinsic value of this painting could be that throughout life, though our exteriors age, our interiors stay vibrant and loved. When others view this work of art, they will have to look deeper than face value to find that meaning. At first, the painting seems simple. As the viewer slowly spots the details, such as the rust on the wheels, the texture on the truck, and the way that the truck is deeply parked in the snow, they then realize the truck has been marked with its steep age. Despite the age, though, there is a glimmer of happiness and joy as the snow reflects on the truck.
