Oprah has faced a lot of adversity in her life that she was forced to overcome, making her into the person she is today. At the age of nine Oprah was raped and abused. Her childhood transformed her to be strong and prominent. It also influenced her to help others recover from bad experiences in their childhood. Oprah set up schools for girls in poverty stricken African countries. She also has had many controversial topics on how to view other people. Oprah Winfrey is one of the most influential people over the last 25 years. She has used many different forms of media to influence and enhance not only individual lives but cultures and communities.

She chose works of fictional literature and invites the author and viewers to have a discussion on the books. As she suggested books, they skyrocketed to the top of the best sellers list. The choices of books had a huge influence on readers because they are moved by Oprah. Today there are two million members that can connect with other local members and start their own book club. Oprah's Book Club was one of the most closely watched and signaled events on television by the public. Oprah`s Angel Network started donating a 100,000 “Use Your Life Award” for people who helped change the lives of others (The My). In 2004 she donated five million to Morehouse College to help fund college scholarships. She donated millions of dollars to students to have a better education. Her passion has grown more and more by donating more than fifty million to charities. These charities include fifty different local organizations that impact many people around the world. For example the AIDS foundation of Chicago. Empowerment, schooling and welfare of women, children, and families around the world has been supported by The Oprah Winfrey Foundation (The My).
