Autism in the United States is more common than some may think. Statistics show that every 1 in 68 people have autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and it is steadily rising. Many of these individuals affected with ASD have trouble functioning in their day to day lives because of a lack of understanding, support, and resources. There are numerous programs and services offered around the country that have similar missions, which is to provide those with autism and their families with the support and resources they need to function in today’s society. SARRC offers programs and services for children with autism and their families through adulthood. Their services are divided into three areas: clinical, school-based, and employment-based. Adults living with autism tend to have a harder time finding the support and tools they need. Autism Speaks has multiple services that they offer to help alleviate this problem, such as Housing and Community Living, Autism and Employment, and Postsecondary Educational Opportunities. Their Housing and Community Living initiative serves to aid adults with ASD in the process of securing a place to live by finding residential communities that offer the support and services they may need. The Autism and Employment initiative allows adults with autism to find employment opportunities that promote an inclusive environment and personally matching job seekers with potential employers. For all teens, the transition into adulthood is generally seen as a challenging and scary process. For teens diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as well as their caregivers, this transition is often more complicated. The period of transition for individuals with ASD into adulthood is intensely more challenging due to their “unique characteristics, the lack of services that address the special needs of such individuals in adulthood, and the expectations of society for a typical path to adulthood in the face of atypical problems” (Geller and Greenberg, 2009, pg. 93). Without the necessary resources to transition, teens with ASD find themselves unprepared for life at work, in college, or community living. Every year doctors diagnose thousands of adults and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Due to the growing awareness of autism and recent developments in technology, scientists and doctors can now discover and observe the effects of autism on society, and people. Starting with its discovery, researchers have been able to diagnose people more effectively. Doctors are beginning to discover what causes this disorder, and are currently trying to find ways to prevent and treat it. Many places have opened their doors to people with this disorder, creating autistic friendly environments where people are patient and understanding. Schools have also become accommodating to autistic children and adults. Autism also puts great strain on family and home lives.
The Autism Ontario for Toronto is beneficial to Child Youth Workers and will allow them to expand their expertise of mental disorders by being able to monitor the individual at the events being held to see how they are interacting with others and have the opportunity to find the child’s weaknesses and progress. It will also allow them to provide support for the child just incase incidences occur such as the child feeling over-whelmed or uncomfortable. Attending the events will allow the Child Youth Worker to put together activities that will interest the individual that can also improve on the child’s weakness.

There is a lack of research in the scientific and medical fields. These science and medical professional’s encounter intensified hardship in locating reliable research in this area of exploration. This lack of study makes it difficult for individuals and adults on the autism spectrum to receive high quality services that could be of assistance for these individuals to live independently. For example, these services, could incorporate specialized assistance in being employed and in perhaps continuing a form of advanced education. Postsecondary education is a critical pathway to employment, and some individual with this condition decide to attend college. Under the Americans with Disability Act colleges and schools that receive any type of federal funding must provide reasonable accommodation’s. These services, unfortunately decrease during the time period of emerging adulthood for individuals with an autism spectrum disorder. I believe that it is highly unfortunate that these adults with an autism diagnosis have less resources available than younger children with the exact same disorder. For my movement, I decided to talk about Autism Speaks. I chose to talk about this organization because I believe that they are an organization that has truly been helping people and families who have children that have been diagnosed with autism. The goal of this paper is to share the message of Autism Speaks and share how they have helped people along the way.

A mentor program is a great program to offer to individuals with autism it sparks their interest. Offering an internship to those struggling to find interest in life will find a desire through a program that offers them specific assignments (Grandin, 2013). Also going to therapy can help with an individual who is struggling with nonverbal skills through different therapeutic methods the child can be taught sign language as a way to communicate and can be an effective program to those who were struggled to communicate (Judd,2015).

This brings the next question onto the table: the importance of special education.
