Deforestation is an environmental problem that needs to be solved because it is causing additional environmental issues such as climate change and soil erosion. A solution for this problem can be found in Arendt’s philosophy, which encourages anti-deforestation organizations, agriculture corporations, and government officials to find a solution that is beneficial for both society and the planet. Unfortunately, certain people in society would follow Nietzsche’s philosophy, which encourages individuals to follow their own standards and create solutions relative to civil disobedience. The Sierra Club is a perfect example of Arendt’s philosophy of encouraging individuals and the organizations they comprise to follow their own ideologies in contrast to following the mass “The term masses applies only when we deal with people who either because of their sheer numbers, or indifference, or a combination of both, cannot be integrated into any organization based on common interest…”(845) In this quote, Arendt is expressing her dissatisfaction towards a totalitarian government who are empowered by the “mass”. The mass consists of people who are not dedicated to a cause and are grouped together just to be deceived by the people in power within a totalitarian government. Environmental organizations are not part of this mass because they pursue their own interests and try to develop standards that benefit the environment. By encouraging anti-deforestation organizations to find a solution by communicating with corporations and the government, we are indirectly promoting the concept of Democratic Pluralism. In democratic pluralism, there are many organizations pursuing different goals actualized by free individuals in society and to achieve these goals they have to come to a common consensus. …show more content…

We can see these strong willed individuals in many places but they are mostly located in highly populated areas. For instance, you can find a few activist and volunteers at the Third Street Promenade located in Santa Monica, CA handing out fliers and informing people about issues such as deforestation, animal abuse, and climate change. This is a perfect example of Nietzsche’s philosophy “On new philosophers, we have no other choice; on spirits that are strong and original enough to give impetus to opposing value judgments and to revalue, to reverse ‘eternal values’…” (832) In this quote Nietzsche explains why we should encourage and allow these strong individuals to implement new social values that will preserve the earth and its forests. However, the issue with Nietzsche’s philosophy is that there is no wrong or right because everything the strong willed individual decides is already assumed to be morally correct. Through Arendt’s philosophy we are going through a debate, which in result provides the common consensus of all organizations in a society.
