Phaedrus once stated, “Things are not always as they seem; the first appearance deceives many.” Appearances can deceive people because humans are so prejudiced against people that do not look, talk, walk, or act like them. Appearances and reality are two very distinct things, with one being a blindfold to one’s judgment and the other being a wake up call. In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Victor, a scientist; The monster, Victor’s creation; and Justine Moritz, who is accused of murder; all appear to be something they are not. Victor, Justine, and the creature are all examples of the struggle between appearances and reality.

When the people that first found her, find the picture and assume that she was responsible for the death of William. However, this was not the case because the truth was that the creature had actually killed William and put the picture of his mother inside of Justine’s dress. From the very beginning, Justine was always grateful with the Frankenstein family. The text clearly states, “This benefit was fully repaid; Justine was the most grateful little creature in the world: I do not mean that she made any professions I never heard one pass her lips, but you could see by her eyes that she almost adored her protectress.” Unfortunately no one out of the people against Justine would believe that, so unfortunately she was tried and hanged for murder. Even though Justine pleaded that she was innocent, no one strongly believed her except Elizabeth and Victor because she was always kind to William and looked after him. According to the Victor’s life story, “She is very clever and gentle, and extremely pretty; as I mentioned before, her mien and her expression continually remind me of my dear aunt.” Justine loved the Frankentein family and would never dare to do something cruel to them because they family had done so much for them.
