In the first paragraph, Joanna Gaines states, “I have always been one to play it safe… But this isn’t how the story goes-- because I am married to the one, the only, Chip Carter Gaines”(Gaines ix). In The Magnolia Story by Chip and Joanna Gaines, an autobiography, telling the story from how they met to just after the first airing of their show Fixer Upper. Like many couples, they go through many up and downs. However, they can always come back from it. I recommend this great book to anyone that has seen and enjoys Chip and Joanna or even just likes to be humored; it not only shows the good things in life but also the unfortunate things. One reason The Magnolia Story is such a good book is that it shows the financial struggles. Some people may feel embarrassed when it comes to financial troubles. Whereas, Chip and Joanna mention their financial struggles several times. The first financial situation involved Chip buying a worn down, holy, and a rusted boat; he believed that Joanna and he could fix it up and live in it. Joanna definitely did not marry just some boring guy: Chip is very unique. When Chip went to jail for hours Joanna bailed him and out and asked if he was ok. He response was “‘Yeah, yeah! You’ll never guess who I saw in there. Alfonzo! Remember the lawn guy who used to work for me? We had a good time catching up!’” (Gaines 72). Chip took a bad situation and made it entertaining. Another time that was an oh-no moment was when Drake, their firstborn, was born. Chip had to go to work and Joanna was out for a walk. He drove by her and she asked, “Chip, where Drake?” (Gaines 77). Chip quickly realized that he had forgotten Drake at home. He then stated, “I sure hope no one from Child Protective Services reads this book” (Gaines 77). The Nolan family have an old tin-can bank that they keep in a closet in their house. Katie was told to have this bank to accumulate money to buy land so she could pass it on to her children. They put as much in as they can afford every day, and it slowly accumulates little by little. This book shows that, a penny saved, is a penny earned. And that every little bit counts. It makes you realize that money is not everything.
Originally published in 1999, Mary Pattillo’s Black Picket Fences explores the circumstances and conventions of the Black middle class, a group that has experienced both scholarly and popular neglect. In the Acknowledgments section of this work, Pattillo details the mentorship she received as a graduate student from William Julius Wilson at the University of Chicago. I will begin with a comparison of the two books, “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave” and “Harriett Ann Jacobs, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” with their title pages. Douglass’s title is announcing that his entire “life” as an “American Slave” will be examined. While, Jacobs’s title offers a contrast and proclaims that this will not be the story of her full life, but a selection of “incidents” that occurred at specific times in her life. Jacobs refers to herself in the title as a “slave girl,” and not an “American slave,”. The House of the Seven Gables written by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a novel that engages the reader in an intricate love story that blends history and a fanciful ancestry. Hawthorne stays true to the Romantic era’s convections through his detailed development of the plot. Through his writing, the reader can capture the emotions, morality and motives of each character. The town of Maycomb is described as a tired old town that moves very slowly and its residents have nothing to fear but fear itself. Being in set in the South during the 1930’s the story does tackle racism and inequality for African Americans as racism was becoming more and more prominent in the 1930’s. The fact that the story takes place in a backwater county in Alabama makes the the injustice even more prevalent. Hideous, Grotesque, putrid, typical statements made to others. Most of the time people get their rude manners from their friends. The many things you say to people should be said by your knowledge and yours alone. Discrimination and judgement towards a recipient is a terrible thing to do just from a “friends perspective” on the subject. Judging people in general is obscure don’t get me wrong, but if you do perhaps judge someone, judge them by your own moral standards.
Prejudice is defined as an opinion formed without taking the time and care to judge fairly. In the book 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee, there are several themes presented like bravery, prejudice, and growing up. The main theme in this novel though is prejudice. In the book, it is not just a case of black and white but the entire novel is about prejudice in many forms including class gender and racial prejudice. As the siblings live out many adventures and mature, both in years and in experience, they start to learn and recognize the prejudices occurring in their town. While they were brought up by Atticus Finch, their father- a man who strongly believes in the equality of all- others in the town of Maycomb do not have these same views. These differences lead to many problems throughout Scout's narration. This best-seller greatly expresses the repercussions of discrimination and prejudice of gender, race, and class.
Huck Finn learns from the actions of people around him, what kind of a person he is going to be. He is both part of the society and an outlier of society, and as such he is given the opportunity to make his own decisions about what is right and what is wrong. There are two main groups of characters that help Huck on his journey to moral maturation. The first group consists of Widow Douglas, Miss Watson, and the judge. They portray society and strict adherence to rules laid out by authority. The second group consists of Pap, the King, and the Duke. They represent outliers of society who have chosen to alienate themselves from civilized life and follow no rules. While these characters all extremely important in Huck’s moral development, perhaps the most significant character is Jim, who is both a fatherly figure to Huck as well as his parallel as far as limited power and desire to escape. Even though by the end of the novel, Huck still does not want to be a part of society, he has made a many choices for himself concerning morality. Because Huck is allowed to live a civilized life with the Widow Douglas, he is not alienated like his father, who effectively hates civilization because he cannot be a part of it. He is not treated like a total outsider and does not feel ignorant or left behind. On the other hand, because he does not start out being a true member of the society, he is able to think for himself and dismiss the rules authority figures say are correct. By the end of the novel, Huck is no longer a slave to the rules of authority, nor is he an ignorant outsider who looks out only for himself.
