Analysis Of Peter Singer's View On Utilitarianism

Many of my thoughts throughout ethics have been towards the utilitarian side. This is where I would differ from that view. If I were to go by the utilitarian view it would be to tax the rich more than anyone. This money would then go to the poor where the money could be used up instead of sitting in a bank account. The utilitarian believes you do whatever it takes to make the most possible people happy. If you took the top five percent in America and taxed them more, then gave it to the bottom thirty percent, you have now helped more people then you did not help. India has to decide between letting the refugees starve to death or diverting funds from their countries development. Peter does not think this should even be a question. Singer states, “ If it is in our power to prevent something bad from happening without thereby sacrificing anything of comparable more importance, we ought, morally, to do it.”(V&V 375) I think what he means by stating this, is that the rich have so much they can give without really sacrificing anything. They do not need to change their lives as they live them right now. They need to donate their time and extra money they have left over. If all the rich were to do this, it would be plenty enough to help support the poor and get them out of starvation. Singer believes that the household should spend just enough money to get by with the necessities. Anything that is left over should go to a relief society. For example, if the average household were to make fifty thousand dollars per year. After they buy everything throughout the year, only living on basic necessities, they spend thirty thousand dollars.
