Farah Ahmedi is a poor girl looking for a better life. Walt Masters is a different boy doing the right thing by saving claims. Aengus is the god of love, curious and determined to obtain what he wants. However, all three of them are determined to complete the mission that they have undertaken because they were trying to make their lives and other lives better.
The determined girl, Farah Ahmedi, is trying to reach her goal of crossing the border into Pakistan to make her life better. She grew up in Afghanistan, a very horrible place to live. Her brother and father died from a rocket attack, which causes Farah and her mother to search for a better life. When they went to try to cross the gate, they couldn’t go through, which made Farah and her mother determined to find another way out of Afghanistan. When Aengus was in the woods, he caught a silver trout. That trout turned into a glimmering girl, and the god fell in love with the girl at first sight. The girl disappeared, which made Aengus very curious about where she went. No matter the cost, Aengus is determined to find his lost love. For instance, “Though I am old with wandering, Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find out where she has gone”(Yeats lines 17,18,19). Aengus wants to find this girl, and he will never stop looking until he has succeeded. He wasn’t in danger at all and his mission was not necessary, but he wanted to use his time to look for the girl. The author stated, “And pluck till time and times are done”(Yeats line 22). Adding on to what was first stated, Aengus will use all of his time, all the way to his death just to find this mysterious girl. Salva helps Nya get a water well in her village years later by using his organization, Water for South Sudan. Iqbal is the true story of Iqbal Masih, a little boy that became a child slave, but was able to set himself and his friends free from slavery. This book is told in the point of view of Fatima a fictional little girl that was one of the children who was enslaved in the same factory as Iqbal. In each book, the characters grow stronger because of a cultural conflict. Cultural conflicts can force people to become stronger.
