Eat Your Vegetables
The great Sir Paul McCartney once said, “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian” (Richards). One person who would agree is David Foster Wallace. In one of his articles, named “Consider the Lobster”, he takes the reader to a Maine Lobster festival. The lobster festival is held during July in the hub on Maine’s lobster industry. An ungodly amount of lobster is cooked, some 25,000 pounds’ worth. While he is there he reports that the lobsters are boiled alive, which is the most common way to prepare lobster, and reminds the audience that, unlike the Lobster Festival programs says, lobsters can feel the pain they endure. He doesn’t outright say it, but it is clear that Wallace believes everyone should be a vegetarian (Wallace). Wallace is not the only person to believe this way. Many others would agree that taking on this lifestyle would be wonderful for a moral cleanse. Some do it out of respect for the animals. Some, out of environmental protection. Still others would suggest to do it for health reasons. Everyone should be a vegetarian because of ethical and health reasons. The ethical reasons include caring about the animals and their welfare, caring about the environment, and caring about world hunger. The health reasons include weight control and less illness like cardiovascular disease.

Many others have chosen not to eat meat out of respect for animals, the environment, or the world’s hungry. Still others have chosen to go vegetarian out of concern for their health, whether they need to lose weight or want to keep the heart attacks at bay. There are still more reasons to go out and choose to eat a salad instead of a bloody steak or a juicy burger, just ask any vegetarian. So instead of causing suffering and eventually causing the planet to burn up from the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, eat some lettuce occasionally and skip the red meat, or any meat for that matter.
