Abstract Art: Alexander Calder (1898-1976) Abstract art, the famous art movement in New York City in 20th century. It is opposite to representational art, included diverse variety of styles, geometric abstraction and minimalism, thru gesturalism and action-painting, to organic abstraction, colour field painting and word art. There have three basic categories, non-naturalist geometric forms, shapes derived from nature but not recognizable as such, also heavily disguised representational, but non-figurative works. There have many synonyms of abstraction like “non-figurative art”, “non-representational art”, or “non-objective art”. These works clear to show out the style of Calder, the smooth line, streamline outlook, simple colour, etc. all of these told us Calder is a fastidious craftsman, he cut, bent, twisted, and punctured the materials by hand, to pursue the natural from of his sculpture. Through Calder’s works, you can see the innovation and the freedom of creation in that period. The prosperous of art movement, the artists came from different country to exhibit their art works, learnt new style of art with others, share and discus. Calder can created without pressure because of the environment and his family background. In that period, many artists made contour line drawings on paper, but Calder was the first to use wire to create three-dimensional “drawing” of people, animals, and objects. The creativity he had to create a famous genre of sculpture, and be an important artist in the world history. The influence in Calder’s mobile can be seen in the work of abstract expressionists Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning and the later Jackson Pollock
