Mahatma Gandhi said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is to uphold a sisterhood of women who continually lose themselves through serving their community and the world at large. What does this "lose yourself in the service of others" phrase imply? While selflessly serving the community, your actions stand for a cause that is greater than you are. Additionally, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated stands on five major pillars: educational and ethical excellence, unity amongst women, the social advancement of women, having a significant presence on college campuses and providing assistance for all people. My passion for these core values is shown through my involvement in the organizations in which I serve, as well as in my day-to-day life. Throughout my Morgan State University matriculation, I have supported the movement for young women to pursue lucrative careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields. As of 2011, women make up twenty percent of the workforce in these fields with only two of the twenty percent being African-American women. The service projects that I am most passionate about typically involve mentoring and/or tutoring. My involvement in these activities allows me to exemplify the five pillars mentioned above. As an example, when I volunteer for the "Introduce a Girl to Engineering" day camp, I mentor young women from local high schools. The mentees from the program often have an idea of their worth, but I make sure to let them know that, although the statistics are not in our favor, they can still push to have an impact in any field.
