We are first introduced to Cordelia and prepared for the future conflict between the two girls when it is mentioned, "The third girl doesn't wave". This lack of warmth towards Elaine is a premonition of what is to come, and is at the same time believable- new girls are often wary of each other, uncertain of what the other will be like. This key moment also reveals certain character aspects in both Cordelia and Elaine that continue through out the bullying period, for example Cordelia's judgmental attitude "her eyes are measuring" or " Cordelia is looking past me to where my parents are…"
The story follows three girls- Jeanette, the oldest in the pack, Claudette, the narrator and middle child, and the youngest, Mirabella- as they go through the various stages of becoming civilized people. Each girl is an example of the different reactions to being placed in an unfamiliar environment and retrained. Jeanette adapts quickly, becoming the first in the pack to assimilate to the new way of life. She accepts her education and rejects her previous life with few relapses. Claudette understands the education being presented to her but resists adapting fully, her hatred turning into apathy as she quietly accepts her fate. Mirabella either does not comprehend her education, or fully ignores it, as she continually breaks the rules and boundaries set around her, eventually resulting in her removal from the school.

A dark haze filled the night air. Happy birthday to me, Mist thought as she slipped through the abandoned street. It was an hour past curfew and if you were anyone else you wouldn’t dare to creep around in the night, but Mist wasn’t anyone else. Her misty blue hair and unique black attire was known all along the land. People feared Mist but they also respected her. Although her father, Captain Hook, who feared little boys and stayed hidden in his broken down boat, was a laughing stock, her tough exterior and excellent skills with a sword brought her reputation up. When Mist was younger, before her father went completely crazy, he used to spend hours among the broken down ship deck teaching Mist the art of swordfighting. That was the only thing she ever thanked her father for otherwise she couldn’t care less how much longer he lived. Mist’s manipulating, deceitful, and downright evil reputation helped her among the little land they called Miscreant. Two people outranked her on Miscreant. Baba Yaga and her son. But since no one had ever seen Baba Yaga’s son, Mist had no competition in the villain department. Baba Yaga ruled over the villainess crowd and was the most feared thing on the island. Not human, no one quite knew what she was. The only time
Rena Cohen had returned from camp high-spirited, anticipating her long-awaited senior year of high school. With only two days left to catch up with her friends, Rena called Malka Koenig and Lizzy Zimmerman and set up to see them at Cafe Bonjour. She couldn’t wait to hear how Malka enjoyed her lessons in computer programming and how Lizzy enjoyed her stay in camp. At the cafe, Rena realized something was wrong. Lizzy and Malka looked uncomfortable around each other and after just a few minutes, Malka got up and walked out. Lizzy refused to tell Rena what was wrong, so Rena got up and left too. When school began, things only got worse. Malka insisted that Rena was her best friend, Lizzy insisted that Rena was her best friend, and Rena wasn’t so sure she was friends with either of them. One thing was for certain: they were no longer the inseparable threesome everyone envied. As her year progressed, Rena grew more and more distant from her once undisputed friends. Their silence baffled her and she felt lost in the crowd; by twelfth even the loners had found their place in the grade. Malka became close friends with Tzipporah since they were both G.O. heads. Lizzy became friends with a girl named Riva. One day Malka approached Rena and told her she wanted to tell ...
As she rose from her spot she felt eyes of many staring at her, whispering. What had she done wrong? Following the angry teacher, her heart beated rapidly inside of her. She was scared for what awaits her outside the door. Behind her, the door slammed and she jumped in startlement, then continued to walk over to Mr. Monroe at the end of the ramp. The first words Mr. Monroe said to Hannah were, “don’t worry you're not in trouble.” “Whew” Hannah let out a huge breath that she was holding. The two of them walked down to the dining hall, then back up again to the dorm, all while talking about what happened the night before in the girls bedroom. Once they arrived at Raven Dorm, none of the downstairs lights were on. Hannah went into the dark room with Mr. Monroe behind her. He paused at the door, holding his hand on the light switch. “Click”, the lights went on and the whole seventh grade class jumped up from the floor and yelled, “SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” This amazed Hannah! Everyone ended the day with delicious cupcakes with blue frosting for all of the seventh graders and Hannah got her own mini chocolate
