The living organism I will be researching on is the Ailuropoda melanoleuca, the Giant panda. The giant panda, a black-and-white bear, has a body typical of bears. It has black fur on ears, eye patches, muzzle, legs, and shoulders. The rest of the animal's coat is white. Their thick, wooly coat helps to keep them warm in their cool mountain homes or forests of its habitat. What do pandas eat? A wild giant panda’s diet consists of other grasses and occasional small rodents or musk deer fawns. Its diet consists almost entirely of the leaves, stems and shoots of various bamboo species. In zoos, giant pandas eat bamboo, sugar cane, rice gruel, a special high-fiber biscuit, carrots, apples, and sweet potatoes (Smithsonian 2004). According to the …show more content…
In the wild, giant pandas are only found in the remote, mountainous regions of central China, in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces of Southwest China, according to the National Zoo. In this area, there are cool, wet bamboo forests that are perfect for the giant panda's needs. Giant pandas make their dens from hollowed-out logs or stumps of coniferous trees found within the forest. They also live in broadleaf and coniferous forests with a dense understory of bamboo, at elevations between 5,000 and 10,000 feet. Torrential rains or dense mist throughout the year characterizes these forests, often shrouded in heavy clouds. The giant panda species previously ranged throughout most of southern and eastern China, with fossils indicating presence as far south as northern Myanmar and northern Viet Nam and stretching north nearly to Beijing (IUCN SSC Bear Specialist Group). Are giant pandas beneficial to humans? There are very few benefits pandas provide to humans. In the bamboo forests of China, they play a crucial role by spreading seeds and helping the vegetation to grow. The panda’s habitat is also important for the livelihoods of local communities, who use it for food, income, fuel for cooking and heating, and medicine. Unfortunately, these benefits of pandas may not benefit humans much longer since they are on the edge of …show more content…
I believe people need to prevent what is making them become extinct because the things that could happen could make the population go down. There are problems including habitat loss poaching and fragmentation. WWF explains how creating new reserves and linking up existing panda populations are key to the species' future. The Chinese government, in partnership with WWF, has also developed bamboo corridors to link pockets of forest, allowing the pandas within them to move to new areas find more food and meet more potential breeding mates. But providing the endangered species land isn’t enough. To prevent a species from being extinct, people need to be more aware of the situation. Another way is by Donating to the WWF and other reputable panda organizations will give these organizations a chance to do additional research, perform panda monitoring, change community development by buying wood saving stoves. The need for fuel currently causes locals to ravage the forest home of the pandas. The WWF and others also patrol panda reserve borders to ensure that no poachers, loggers or hunters make it
The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a beloved creature known to the world. However, it is also a creature that is critically endangered and faces extinction. As human advancements obliterate the habitats and influence the lifestyle of the Giant Panda, research is conducted to uncover the cause of the Giant Panda’s current predicament and to improve the methods of conservation to save the Giant Panda. Information gained by researching the Giant Panda and its behaviors would help scientists and conservationists discover just what is hurting the Giant Panda, and what people can do to stop the Giant Panda’s population from decreasing.
they are at the top of the food chain of the grassland plants and animals. Grizzly bears are powerful, top-of-the-food-chain predators, yet much of their diet consists of nuts, berries, fruit, leaves, and roots. Bears also
While some people may think that they’re “protecting” the animals from extinction, that’s not something that they should be doing. That is a job for zoos and animal protection facilities. People should just visit the zoo if they want to see the animals that much
Pythons have had both positive and negative effects on the environment. They eat pretty much everything in sight, they are bought as pets then thrown out into the wild once they get big, and people have been pretty irresponsible with them.
The chance for a grown man to act alongside a cohort of children as the aging, homeless matinee idol in David Mamet’s “Revenge of the Space Pandas” does not come along very often. So when that opportunity presented itself to Andrew Biliter, he leaped at the chance.
Burmese pythons are causing large problems in Florida. In the Everglades National Park, it is hard to spot any small or large animals, because the burmese pythons are hunting them. Which is concerning to animal population.
The plant life In China is very varied. The natural forests are in the far-off mountain areas, where you can find are oak, ginkgo, pine, azalea, and camellia. Also, a tree that would come to everyone’s mind as they think of China, is the bamboo.
The giant panda is part of the Ursidae family and in the order of Carnivora. Animals that are in the order of Carnivora usually eat meat but the giant panda specializes in the herbivorous diet of bamboo. The giant panda has retained the typical monogastric carnivore digestive system which is typically short and has no special compartments to retain food or any symbiotic bacteria needed to break down cellulose from the bamboo into any usable nutrients. Since the giant panda is unable to digest cellulose and lacks the necessary symbiotic bacteria for the digestion of bamboo, they have to rely on mainly the cell content through a process where the bamboo is first eaten and then passed unaltered in the digestive tract in a very short time. The giant panda must eat a large amount of bamboo daily in order to meet their energy requirements.
Figure 1 indicates that the Giant Panda is considered as a Primary Consumer. The arrows are going in a horizontal order with the arrows pointing towards the apex predator which is the Bengal Tiger. This food chain suggests that the Bengal Tiger is one of the dominant predator of the food chain while the Panda only nourishes on Bamboo. Bamboo is shown as a primary producer because it can make its own food using photosynthesis.
So what is an endangered species? What is an extinct species? What has happened to cause them to become endangered or extinct? What needs to be done in order to save the endangered species from becoming extinct? Can anything be done to save them? The answer to most of these questions is not known by everyone. With all the attention that this subject gets from the government or groups that fight for the environment, it gets the same amount of disregard from the public. Many people want to help or donate but very few of those actually follow through. This is a very important subject that needs to be taken serious by the public. It needs their full attention because they are the ones that can truly make a change. People really don’t understand the concept of extinction. If somethi...
...ing pandas pose for pictures. The pandas are starved so they will be more obedient when being photographed. Jill Robinson of Animals Asia: ''They are clearly victims of training using negative reinforcement, constant beating and lack of food until they get the trick right. '' To make sure the bears do not pose a threat to their trainers, they have their teeth and claws filed down. Animals are deprived of their basic right to live healthily.
The rainforests are the world’s oldest ecosystems dating back to almost 100 million years. The largest rainforests are located around the Amazon in South America, around the Equator in Africa, and in South Asia. Smaller rainforests thrive in Central America, Islands on the Pacific and Caribbean, and Mexico. Rainforests maintain a temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit and get between 160 to 400 inches of rain per year. The conditions that the Rainforests have are exemplary for life to grow and flourish. The area where the rainforests are located saves them from natural disasters and saved them from the loss of life during the ice ages. Due to these conditions the Rainforest is home to 50-70 million species (Facts about Rainforests). The rainforest’s resources began to be favored by the economy in the early 1990’s.
Please help to save the animals, or they won’t be here any longer. Poachers are everywhere; “heck” one of them might be your next door neighbor. Poaching is only one of the leading causes of animals being on the endangered species list, so with all these poachers we need to protect the animals more closely. Animals that are close to extinction need to be placed in a zoo or sanctuary so they can flourish. People need to do this for the animals, they may not like it, but it helps get their numbers up.
Also, the Red Panda lives in colder climates and forest type biomes with bamboo. They live in temperate type biomes. They can be found is the delicious forests. Red Pandas love bamboo as their habitat/sh...
