In the afghansitan culture marriage is different from the American cultures. There are some rules that you have to follow when wedded. Afghan marriage traditions allow girls of ten years of age or younger to get engaged, but not married. The marriage can take place only when they are sixteen.

Afghan women are not allowed to marry non Muslim men. However, Muslim men can marry non Muslim women of Christian and Jew belief. The groom can be a first cousin. However if the parents are not interest in the first cousin and think they are not sutiable enough, then the parents of the bride look for a another sutiable groom.

The identification of a groom for the girl are approved from the women of the family. The women discusses with the other members of the family or the community and identify the grooms who could be a suitable match for the girl. The age, looks, education background, his ability to support his wife and family background are taken into consideeration. When the match is found they arrange the marriage. Also, in a different way of a women of Afghanistan are chose to be married if a man decides to choose a partner for himself without help of a match-maker, from his parents. If some girl accepts his gifts, all he has to do is to cut off a handful of her hair or throw a sheet over her, and announce that she is his future wife. He must get acceptence from the father before he is allowed to take her to his home.

The bride’s father then, communicates his family’s interest in the marriage between the children to the groom’s family. The groom’s family would have to pay for everything. Including the wedding expenses and the house and the items in the house etc.

... bride to her new home. When she steps on the ground, a sheep is sacrificed under her feet and when she steps into the house, the bride whacks in the doorstep. This is thought to be a good omen and the wife will stay with her husband forever. After this, a number of girls take the wife to her room and the party ends there.

Takht jami is another ceremony held on the third or seventh day after the wedding. Close relatives and friends bring gifts for the bride. The gifts are mainly dishes and furniture for the new house.

A few days after the wedding party, the groom goes and greets his father-in-law with expensive gifts. Later the couple’s relatives come and they begin inviting the couple to their houses. This is called Paeewazee.
