Weddings consist of a bride and a groom to fulfill the needs and requirements of their wedding. Although for the people of Oaxaca, the bride and groom need their parents for the needs, requirements, and consent to the wedding. The wedding will not proceed if the bride’s parents do not give consent to the marriage. Oaxaca people believe marriage is not a game, so the beginning to the end is taken seriously through every phase. Oaxaca weddings consist of various phases to complete the marriage.
First, the parents of the groom must visit the bride’s parents at their home to ask for their daughter’s hand. In the visit, the groom’s parents take the bride’s parents cigars to smoke as they discuss about the marriage. The bride’s parents then inform the groom’s parents they’ll talk to their daughter to see if she actually wants to get married. So they say to send their son between two to four weeks.
Second, the groom visits the bride’s parents at their house to talk with her parents about the marriage. The parents question the groom to see if he actually loves their daughter. The groom clarifies to the bride’s parents he meet their daughter and fell in love with her. The groom also says he knows their daughter like a recipe. In the end of the visit, the parents tell him to come back in a week.

For most Oaxaca people the food preparation begins since Thursday, if not Wednesday, of the wedding week. The family of the groom are in charge for the food in the morning and evening of the wedding day. For instance, some Oaxaca people kill chickens, turkeys, and pigs to be used as meat in the food. On the day of the wedding, Saturday, the family of the groom are preparing the food since before dawn.
