Abraham Cruzvillegas and Jessica Stockholder are both famous and successful artists. Cruzvillegas makes most of his art and sculptures within the landscape of his former home (walkerart.org). Stockholder’s art is made in a similar fashion. Artnet.com states that every one of her art pieces “is created specifically for the site in which they’re placed”, something known to Stockholder as “installations”. Both artists base their paintings and sculptures on their environment, not just their emotions or feelings.

Most of the art that Cruvillegas is responsible for was influenced by his “upbringing, education, and training.. and the urban city landscape” (Coghlan, 2014). Cruzvillegas likes to see autoconstrucción in his art, meaning that he believes it can show a sense of self identity. That seems to be true for his installation called “The Autoconstrucción Suites (Star Tribune, 2013)., which is based off of how his parents and neighbors built their environment. Cruzvillegas has stated that a big “trigger” for new developments in his work is his house and the landscape in Mexico: “My house shows the evidence of a social clash and uneven wealth distribution, but also of the ingenuity and the wisdom that [follow from] specific needs” (Coghlan, 2003). As for Stockholder, she believes that art is more contextual (rxart.net). Stockholder believes in site specific installations, meaning she actually builds her art in a specific spot that is designed for that art work. [Where might her work be put? Referring back to the art21 video, he states, “Sometimes, I just play with the materials, finding combinations, taking whatever is at hand.” Stockholder also uses found objects in her work.
