Grammar is one of the components in the study of English language. Today, effective communication is crucial and one way to establish and maintain an effective, fruitful conversation is to master the rules that revolve around the language. It is crucial to have grammar as according to Harvey (1983), “…grammar is the system of rules we use to arrange words into meaningful English sentences.” It is imperative to master English Grammar and more importantly, the tenses. According to the English Dictionary, the word tense means the time, as past, present, or future, expressed by such a category. The word also has been derived from the word the Latin word, tensus which later becomes tens (Middle English). Tensus refers to time and since there is a need to express time differently, we use tenses in our daily life. …show more content…

In the article “Massacre at Virginia Tech leaves 32 dead”, several tenses are used – simple present tense, simple past tense, past perfect tense and past perfect continuous. Simple present tense basically is about what one is currently doing and there is not statement of its completeness. Simple past on the other hand refers to what one did some time in the past, past perfect tense expresses action in the past before another action in the past and lastly, past perfect continuous refers to something that started in the past and continued up until another time in the past.
