The 1920s were a time of change especially concerning the entertainment industry and the build up of movie companies. Entertainment is an important aspect in everybody's lives and just like people entertainment changes constantly. In the beginning of this time period people were becoming less confined and open their minds to new ideas this had an effect of new ways to entertain. The big operation of this time period was films it started out with silent films, until “talkies” pictures that synchronized sound came out. The creation of films especially “talkies” changing movie business, culture, and, created a lasting effect on visual entertainment.

After The Warner Brothers put a patent on the vitaphone eventually “Don Juan”, premiered in 1926, this was not the first talking film but the film had a musical soundtrack which was a big advance in technology getting other companies thinking about producing films with sound (freeland). The most famous of beginning talking films was the “The Jazz Singer”, this film was launched in 1927 (Freeland). The film ran for eighty eight minutes and had a budget of four hundred and twenty two thousand. This was a milestone in movie making history launching the rise of the industry (freeland). This film was the face of synchronized films changing the game forever. This success indicated the time when Warner brothers would become very financially wealthy and become biggest name in motion pictures at the time. The company wanted to expand not just with its technology but with the availability of movie showings for the world, so they bought The Stanley Company of America for their successful theater chain boasting their popularity (Freeland). This made Warner brothers even bigger and well known they were able to produce more than three hundred a year on average (Freeland).It can be concluded Warner Brothers had the ultimate rise in the roaring twenties which led the company to lasting success in the modern world. The 1920s were known as the Era of Mass Popular Culture. People were extremely social and loved to be entertained in large social groups. These social groups allowed people with the same interests to spend time together and enjoy themselves. Sports brought people together more than all other events. The people of the 1920s were entertained by sports that were also played by Negros and women.
The silent era in film occurred between 1895 through 1929. It had a a major impact on film history, cinematically and musically. In silent films, the dialogue was seen through muted gestures, mime, and title cards from the beginning of the film to the end. The pioneers of the silent era were directors such as, D. W. Griffith, Robert Wiene and Edwin S. Porter. These groundbreaking directors brought films like first horror movie and the first action and western movie. Due to lack of color, the silent films were either black and white or dyed by various shades and hues to signal a mood or represent a time of day. Now, we begin to enter towards the sound era and opposed to the silent era, synchronized sounds were introduced to movies. The classic movie, The Jazz Singer, which was directed by Alan Crosland, was the first feature length film to have synchronized dialogue. This was not only another major impact in film history, but it also played a major part in film technology and where film is right now.

Inventions of the 1920s include the American Hammond Organ, adhesive bandages, car radios, loudspeakers, electric shavers, and traffic signals. Household items like electric irons, toasters, refrigerators, air conditioners, radio, television, and vacuum cleaners made daily life very different from previous generations. The radio was in almost every home and provided listeners with sports, concerts, and news. Radio quickly became a national obsession. For those that could not afford a radio, the radio in public places became a gathering place and allowed people to keep up with issues and share ideas and opinions. The article 1920s Movies mentions “The production of The Jazz Singer in 1927 did much to change the industry’s perception of talking pictures. When people think of the 1920s they think of the great depression. What people don’t know is that twenties were much more than the depression. The 1920s were one of Americas most prosperous eras. This era brought peace, new technology, inventions, new dances, flappers, entertainment, prohibition and much more. The twenties have been described in many ways including the Roaring Twenties, the Jazz age and the era of wonderful nonsense. The name that best illustrates this time period is the era of wonderful nonsense because the crazy fads.

This stated that any movie written had to pass a certain criteria examples included: if containing sex, violence, and killing. Early silent movies were often accompanied by live piano or organ music. The introduction of sound to film started in the 1920’s. By the 1930’s a vast majority of films were now talkies. ‘If you put a sound consistent to visual image and specifically human voice you make a “talkie”’ (Braun 1985 pg. 97). In 1926 Warner Brothers introduced sound to film but, other competing studios such as FOX, didn’t find it necessary to incorporate sound to their motion pictures production, as they were making enough money through their silent movies. Warner Brothers decided to take what was considered a risky move by adding sound to their motion picture, a risk taken, as they weren’t as successful in the silent movie department. But this risk paid off with the hit release of ‘The Jazz Singer’ in 1927. Though sound in films was then acceptable and successful it wasn’t until the 1950’s that it became feasible to the public as sound was introduced to cinema by the invention of Cinerama by Fred Waller. The Cinerama used 35mm film strip and seven channels of audio.
