Assistive technology is technology, which is used by an individual that has a disability to allow the individual to perform roles that may otherwise be difficult or impossible to complete. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder learn differently than other children, often have struggle with spoken and written language expression. Assistive technologies are devices which help children with autism completes everyday tasks they struggle with. Many devices, any touch screens, like an IPad or IPhone in the use of certain applications can be used. Applications such as a touch to speak or feelings applications to help express what they have trouble communicating. The practice of combining new technology and devices will support, improve, and help a child with autism’s learning process. The use of different communication technologies provides learning materials and ideas, assist and communication in the classroom. Communication technology can be utilized effectively in teaching students with autism in an early childhood setting. Autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disability that causes problems with an individual’s social skills and communication. There are different levels of autism. Levels of autism can be low, mild or severe, and is different in every individual. Individuals diagnosed with autism may have struggles with communication, social skill and expressing their feeling. Although there is no cure for autism, there are intervention and alternative and augmentative technologies, which can be provided for the individual in need. Using aids and devices in an educational setting promotes active learning, thinking and collaboration with peers and educators and expressing ones self. It is estimated that one in every sixty eight children will be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (CDC, 2014). In schools around the country these students are struggling in their classroom environment due to deficits in three areas; communication skills, social skills, and repetitive behaviors or interest (Marder & Fraser, 2012). Implementing the use of technology in the classroom like iPad, iPod, android tablets, e-readers, and computers is beneficial to students with autism spectrum disorder. It can increase communication skills, can help make their classroom experience more pleasant, and it gives them the best chance at success.
Assistive technology is sorted accordingly to the task for which the learner needs support and enhancement. This will be decided and referred to by a specialist team with specific and extensive knowledge of the individual’s disability. The AT required, will be determined by the specialist team after a full evaluation is performed, this sometimes can be an extensive prolonged process. Once the evaluation process is complete, the specialist team attends meetings to provide support and training with relevant staff and the student. With the correct AT the learner will become a more positive and operative learner within the classroom and school environment.

The use of the picture exchange communication system, as shown by the studies above, can be an extremely effective tool for teaching children with autism social and communicative behaviors. However, PECS is only effective when it is implemented correctly; teachers should be aware of the amount of time that teaching this system will require. The picture exchange communication system is one of many visual support systems that can be implemented to support student learning, both in the special education and general education classroom. Individual student characteristics, as always, should be taken into consideration when choosing a visual support system.
One of the most difficult things teachers will face when dealing with Autistic children is their lack of communication skills and inappropriate or nonexistent social skills. In addition to academic instruction children with Autism require instruction in communication techniques and social skills.
