“What makes good writing?”
It’s an interesting question, and one that can be difficult to answer. Everybody will have his or her own idea of what makes writing “good” writing. This question depends on the individual experiences of everyone asked, and so it can be almost impossible to pin down a definite reply. In truth, there isn’t really a right answer, just a pile of suggestions and general opinions that are formed differently in every individual’s mind.
Perhaps the single most important thing to consider before even beginning writing a piece is who exactly will be reading it. Before an author begins composing a body of work, there are three requirements necessary to establish beforehand. The composer must first “have a specific purpose and an audience”( Braziller, Kleinfeld, 7). A purpose allows there to be an overall reason to write. The purpose is necessary to persuade, inform, educate, or entertain the reader on a certain topic. The topic can be caused by "the time period, location, current event, or cultural significance (University, 1995-2018 )”. Identifying the audience is necessary since it instructs the composer how to communicate in a way the audience will appreciate and understand. Knowing how the audience will best understand the information gives the composer an advantage when trying to communicate the
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
Beneficial to shaping the views on society related topics, one should consider the choice of diction to use. It is critical to choose

The three most important characteristics in her writing promote individual freedom, women roles, and feminine status. Loy, in her manifesto seems to choose a destructive path against the man and female in a struggle power of one another. She states in the beginning that women are not equal to men. “be brave & deny at the outset-that pathetic clap-trap war cry woman is the equal of man-she is not” (Loy, 2013, p.1981). She argues that men and women are enemies “the only point at which the interests of the sexes merge-is the sexual embrace” (Loy, 2013, p. 1982). Relationships between men and woman require sharing, but Loy dismisses men by stating women must “seek within yourselves to find out what you are” (Loy, 2013, p. 1982). Women need to find themselves before successfully having a relationship with a man. This would be necessary for the relationship to grow and nurture. Loy states “to obtain results you must make sacrifices” (Loy, 2013. p. 1982). However, making these sacrifices does not r...

This question, posed by author Peter Elbow in his book Writing with Power, is directly at the center of the debate of writing for an audience. On one hand, by having an idea of who the audience is, the writer will be able to write in an effective way. However, there are also situations when the constant reminder of the audience will hinder the writer from creating their best work. The writer must confront the audience in his or head, safe or dangerous, in order to continue writing to the best of his or her ability.

George Orwell in his essay “Why I write”, written in 1946 and published in London, addresses the reasons that made him become a writer and eventually sets four main general principles that are the main drive force for every piece of writing. “I write it because there is some lie that I want to expose, some fact to which I want to draw attention and my initial concern is to get a hearing.” By showing his inner drive to write he portrays a greater picture about writing as he shows how one writes consciously about what concerns one’s feelings and subconscious thinking. The four main principles of writing that Orwell presents in his essay are sheer egoism, aesthetic enthusiasm, historical impulse and political purpose.

In the twelve years I was in school, I learn three forms of writing, essay, letters, and stories. My favorite form of writing is creative writing. My least favorite is writing a letter. The reason I prefer creative writing over the other, form is because I have the freedom to make up anything. The reason I dislike writing letter is because many letters have different formats. For example, I can’t uses the friendly letter format on a business letter; I would have to use block format. Even though I prefer creative writing, my most commonly used skill is to write essays. Though, I may find essay writing a chore, I still prefer it over letter writing. Among these books I still read The Odyssey and Macbeth, for inspiration.
Taking a creative writing class was a good way for me to express my thoughts and feelings onto paper, as well as read my other classmates stories. Reading stories created by other people lead me into their mind brain to experience what type of writer they were, it was an overall exquisite class. I believe that every person has a way of expressing who they are through writing stories of their own, fiction is the best way to express your creative imagination. This class that I took for two years helped me become a better writer and helped me understand the types of writers we have.
Without the audience, there is no specific way a writer can establish structure for their essay. The purpose of the audience is easily overlooked by most writers resulting in an improper balance to their essay. In Bartholomae’s Inventing the University he states “ After taking on the sound of the specialized discourse, students must try to seem as insiders with their academic by beginning with common points…” Through his statement, Bartholomae attaches the concept of using similar language as the audience in order to to gain their attention. Through similar language it is easier for the audience to connect with the writer and have a better reception of the writing. Similar to the purpose statement, the audience must be addressed clearly and properly in the assignment. When writers fluctuate between different audiences their writing can come off as sloppy and not personal. Without the proper connection to the audience, the writer will struggle to convey their purpose effectively, which can ruin a paper. Although a paper may include a clear purpose statement and address the audience properly, the paper will not be efficient without credible
