What makes a writer efficient in the academic setting? A skilled writer is someone who is able to properly use academic components in the correct situation and when needed. Without the use of these components writers are left with unpolished pieces of work and set forth on a downward spiral in their writing. Each writer is faced with a different scenario which tells them what components are necessary, this awareness of the situation and occasion is crucial when creating the image of being an expert. Without a clear purpose statement the writer can easily stray from the topic of the assignment and confuse the audience. Some writers find it difficult to present a clear purpose or easily get confused, to avoid this a writer should present a straight-forward statement. Recently I was asked to write an essay in two class periods, meaning that the quality of my essay wouldn’t be as high when compared to my other essays that I had a longer time to work on. Due to the amount of time given, I knew that in order to write an excellent essay I needed to establish a clear statement. In my essay I established my purpose through the sentence “ This has led me to urge the addition of “Shitty First Drafts” by Anne Lamott and “Writing for an Audience” by Linda Flower to the curriculum for Seniors.” With my statement, I present a clear idea that is straight forward without clusters of high vocabulary fillers that could. As writers in a higher advanced educational system, our assignments must not only catch the reader’s eye but give enough information as well. Without the audience, there is no specific way a writer can establish structure for their essay. The purpose of the audience is easily overlooked by most writers resulting in an improper balance to their essay. In Bartholomae’s Inventing the University he states “ After taking on the sound of the specialized discourse, students must try to seem as insiders with their academic by beginning with common points…” Through his statement, Bartholomae attaches the concept of using similar language as the audience in order to to gain their attention. Through similar language it is easier for the audience to connect with the writer and have a better reception of the writing. Similar to the purpose statement, the audience must be addressed clearly and properly in the assignment. When writers fluctuate between different audiences their writing can come off as sloppy and not personal. Without the proper connection to the audience, the writer will struggle to convey their purpose effectively, which can ruin a paper.
