My Nursing Journey

I have learned that nursing is not something you choose once, but something you choose every day. Nursing is a multidimensional career with great opportunities and rewards but is also coupled with difficult intellectual, physical and emotional challenges. My journey to get into and through nursing school has been a fight every step of the way, but there have also been many experiences that have confirmed to me that this is what I was born to do. With every obstacle and challenge that threatened to keep me from my goal, I have persevered and chosen to keep fighting for what I wanted. At the time I thought I wanted to be a physician so I originally started as an athletic training major. I chose this because I had enjoyed being a student athletic trainer while in high school. I also thought it would stand out from all the biology and chemistry pre-med majors when I applied to medical school. That summer before leaving for college, I realized that I only desired to be a physician because I wanted to be smarter than my mother who is an advanced practice nurse. I grew up with a mom who was a nurse, and I thought I knew what that meant. As I considered my options and goals to become a physician didn’t seem right anymore. I knew I wanted to go into healthcare, but I was uncertain about which field I wanted to pursue. The more I thought about it, the more I realized I wanted to advocate for patients, perform skills, teach patients and families, administer medications and provide emotional support. I am resilient and have a lot to contribute to the nursing profession. I choose nursing today and every day because it is my calling and I have worked hard to achieve it. I have dedicated myself to be the best nurse I can be and to continue to grow and learn throughout my career. I feel an allegiance to those who have come before me in the nursing profession to be conduct myself in a way that honors all those who have made this opportunity possible for me. I also believe I have an obligation to the future of nursing and to those who come after me. I know that as my nursing career progresses I will continue to be challenged mentally, physically and emotionally, but I also look forward to the rewards that will come through my
