My experience with ARM architecture, Embedded Flash Storage and Linux Kernel in Qualcomm drives me to investigate in broad areas of computer architecture spanning from digital circuits to high-level operating systems. Numerous theoretical approaches and practical solutions are proposed by both industry and academia to address problems with scalability, performance, power consumption, reliability, and security in contemporary compute systems, yet plethora of opportunities still exists to embrace extreme ends of the spectrum - embedded systems to enterprise servers. In my graduate studies, I would like to explore in these problems to get a “big picture” of the discipline and focus on the internal details of each problem and how they are being addressed in the academic environment.
Contrary to conventional design, computing is no longer adhered to integrated chip; it crosses over the boundary and reaches out to cloud. This evolution of Mobile Computing poses stringent constraints on power consumption in both hand-held mobile devices and cloud infrastructure. In addition, other challeng...
Smartphone's are unquestionably one of the most useful devices of the 21st century but they continue to have one critical flaw- battery life. unpredictable battery lifetime issue from multitasking can have a significant negative effect on the availability of Smartphone devices.
In todays fast-paced society there has been an increased demand for resources to be more accessible. This demand has created the trend of devices, such as laptops, to become more and more portable. A good example of portability would be the way the way desktops evolved into bulky laptops, and then laptops into smartphones and tablets. What makes the MacBook Air more portable than most is it’s small design, long battery life, and with it being lightweight. Other laptops by Apple, like the Macbook Pro, weighing about 5 pounds don’t come close to being as lightweight as the Air. When MacBook Air was released in 2008 it was introduced as the world’s thinnest laptop coming in at 0.68 inches and weighing only 2.38 pounds. Compared to other laptops the only other device that comes close would be ...
In this recent century, there is ease into taking our technology as something for granted. After all, technology has opened up our abilities to instantly connect to the other side of the world, instantly retrieve information from the Internet, and instantly listen to digital content if desired. However, while a cell phone, laptop, and iPod has many differences from one another, all of those three devices share one item in common at the very least and that is a Lithium-Ion Battery.

Virtualization technologies provide isolation of operating systems from hardware. This separation enables hardware resource sharing. With virtualization, a system pretends to be two or more of the same system [23]. Most modern operating systems contain a simplified system of virtualization. Each running process is able to act as if it is the only thing running. The CPUs and memory are virtualized. If a process tries to consume all of the CPU, a modern operating system will pre-empt it and allow others their fair share. Similarly, a running process typically has its own virtual address space that the operating system maps to physical memory to give the process the illusion that it is the only user of RAM.
Because of the robust Linux programmer community, several “flavour’s” of Linux (known as “vendors”) are available, and each is specialized in a slightly different way. This robust operating system is being widely adopted by IT professionals in growing businesses because of its high quality, reliability, and price.
Ans. The answer lies in algorithmic efficiency which is one of strategy for green computing that provides better power management and higher energy utilization.
Computers are one of the most popular kinds of electronic devices in the world today. Whether kid or adult, male or female, everyone wants to learn how to operate the computer. People use computers for different purposes such as typing papers, creating websites, making presentations, browsing on the internet, playing games, etc. In fact, many people are still confused about choosing what kind of computer they want to buy. In the world today, there are two types of computers: notebook/laptop and desktop. They both are actually very different in several ways. In this paper, I will compare the size, connectivity, power, and price of notebook and desktop computers. I can make these comparisons because I have both a notebook and a desktop computer in my apartment.
In the past few decades, one field of engineering in particular has stood out in terms of development and commercialisation; and that is electronics and computation. In 1965, when Moore’s Law was first established (Gordon E. Moore, 1965: "Cramming more components onto integrated circuits"), it was stated that the number of transistors (an electronic component according to which the processing and memory capabilities of a microchip is measured) would double every 2 years. This prediction held true even when man ushered in the new millennium. We have gone from computers that could perform one calculation in one second to a super-computer (the one at Oak Ridge National Lab) that can perform 1 quadrillion (1015) mathematical calculations per second. Thus, it is only obvious that this field would also have s...
Current challenges to achieve Green Computing are enormous and the impact is on computing performance. Efforts of governments and non-governments organizations (NGOs) are also appreciate-able.
Global energy demand from data centers has increased 50% from 2005-2010. It grew by 19% in 2012 alone. This is in contrast to the global electricity consumption which was roughly flat.
Computers are very complex and have many different uses. This makes for a very complex system of parts that work together to do what the user wants from the computer. The purpose of this paper is to explain a few main components of the computer. The components covered are going to be system units, Motherboards, Central Processing Units, and Memory. Many people are not familiar with these terms and their meaning. These components are commonly mistaken for one and other.
This machine has power. Its Fourth-generation quad-core Intel Core i7 processor is recorded to be the fastest performance in the history of MacBook Pro. Thanks to the speeds...
Truth to be said, a vast number of applications used by OS are primary being developed on Linux since of its cross functional module type. Linux has a bright future shining upon that operating system because of the compatibility and user-oriented environment that supports ever-lasting changes and improvisation so that the applications and usage of Linux with its variants can be found in each segment of today’s and future exploitation of PC and other “smart” machines destined to be Linux-supported.
Technology is changing our world more than ever before and the catalyst now is the smartphone (Lee, Chang, Lin & Cheng, 2014). The introduction of smartphone in the last decade has hyped up a technological revolution in the mobile phone industry and led improvement to the lives of mankind. Old bulky cell phone models with monochrome screen and keypads are replaced with ultra-thin smartphones equipped with advance gadgets and large, vivid LED screens. Smartphones can also install a series of useful mobile applications such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram that can perform task beyond the basic capabilities of phone calling and short message services. It’s just like carrying a very tiny and portable laptop around. All these features and convenience
