Women are Sexual Objectified and Discriminated Against in the United States Due to Media
Almost a century ago, women got their right to vote. After the 1960's, contraceptives were no longer deemed salacious and gained approval from the FDA. All throughout the 1960's, women conquered a myriad of achievements; Congress finally passed the Equal Pay Act, which made it illegal to pay a man more than a woman for the same job, paid maternity leave was considered, and action was taken to allow women to enjoy the same educational and employment opportunities as the superior and privileged white males. In the 1970's, women were granted the right to abortions, marital rape laws started to surface along with many other acts that would hinder the discrimination against women. Forty years pass and any rational person could conclude that women are fully emancipated and sexism is a thing of the past. However, this is not the case in America. In fact, women still have a long way to go. In a hyper-sexual society, women are often sexually objectified and are not given the same prestigious opportunities as males.
Those behind mass media are often the culprits of a cultures way of thinking. The sole intent of the media is to convey messages to large masses. Media shapes the way we think, sometimes directly and overtly, but sometimes covertly to the extent that the audience does not recognize the internalization of material. When one thinks of a hero, a political figure, a model, ect, one often thinks of one of the two binary genders; rarely do they think of both.
