Violence is one of the most problematic issues society faces today, and it has been increasing day after day, in the streets of our cities. The most common description of what violence really is can be given as negativity towards something or someone either through physical or verbal actions, which often causes the victim to suffer pain. The different types of violence that exist in our multi-cultural society are out-numbered, but the most evident ones are domestic, gang, sexual, and racial violence. While violence can definitely be reduced, it will never be eliminated due to the nature of humans.

Domestic violence, also known as spousal abuse, occurs when a person in an intimate relationship or marriage tries to dominate and control the other person. He or she uses fear, guilt, shame, and intimidation to gain complete power over their spouse. He or she may threaten, hurt you, or hurt those around you. In Canada, over 38,000 incidents of domestic violence were reported across Canada in 2006. The most frequently reported violent offences were common assault and major assault. Domestic violence has always been hard to keep watch of due to the people involved being so close to each other. Fortunately, many Canadian agencies have started to recognize the needs for abuse hotlines, shelters, crisis centres, and tougher consequences. While it may be impossible to eliminate domestic violence, it surely is possible to reduce it and prevent it.

Some of the most common acts of violence spreading increasingly in our cities currently seem to be gang and money related. The acts committed are often a direct result of the friction between different gangs over various issues such as pride, land, guns, drugs, and money. In 2002, Canada had ...

The main institutions addressing the issue of violence include Law, Education, Family, and Politics. The police and courts are responsible for apprehending the criminals and putting them away in jails. Schools educate the youth about the different forms of violence, and also teach the youth what to do if put in a stressful situation. Like schools, Families educate the youth about what is right and what is wrong. They provide support, and ensure the safety of them as well. While you may not hear much about Politics, they address the issue of violence as well, but in a much different manner. They are the ones who pass all the bills and laws that make for tough penalties and consequences, making people that want to cause violence think twice.
