Love and Lust in Shakespeare’ sonnets
Shakespeare’ sonnets are on a variety of themes such as time, love, gender, politics, sexuality, law, methaphysics and many others. They express strong feelings and strong arguments. However shakespeare struggle with love and lust is evident in his sonnets. Troughout the reading of Shakespeare’ sonnets I can persieve that he is a profound admirer of beuty; and he persieves beuty of different ways. There are some kinds of beuty that he considers good for his spirit, and others that he considers bad or evil for his spirit. The beuty of the sun, earth, and sea for example are good for shakespeare; On the other hand the beuty of women is evil for him, because it persuades him to act with lust. Here initiates the dilema that causes the struggle he has with love ans lust.
It seems that Shakespeare consider women as symbols of lust, since their beuty seduces men and makes them act in response to the evil desires that are inside of them - desires of the flesh -which corrup the spirit. “ Two loves I have of comfort and despair, which like two spirits do suggest me still: The better angel is a man right fair, The worser spirit a woman, colored ill. To win me soon to hell, my female evil. Tempteth my better angel...and would corrupt my saint to be a devil” ( Sonnet 144, page 821, red book).
The beuty of women is the cause of lust, as it is also pictured in sonnet 1, when it says:
“ From fairest creatures we desire increase, That thereby beuty’s rose might never die”.
Another sonnet that express Shakespeare’s blame on women for being the symbol of passion is sonnet 29: “ A woman’s face with Nature’s own hand painted Hast thou, the master mistress of my passion” (page 811).
Not only the beuty of women causes passion and lust according to shakespeare sonnets, but also the beuty of art seduces men to passionate and lust. In sonnet 128, the author is being seduced by the woman who is playing the instrument; however, in this case he does not feel seduced by the woman, but he is seduced by the song that she is playing:
In “Sonnet,” Billy Collins satirizes the classical sonnet’s volume to illustrate love in only “…fourteen lines…” (1). Collins’s poem subsists as a “Sonnet,” though there exists many differences in it countering the customarily conventional structure of a sonnet. Like Collins’s “Sonnet,” Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 130” also faces incongruities from the classic sonnet form as he satirizes the concept of ideal beauty that was largely a convention of writings and art during the Elizabethan era. Although these poem venture through different techniques to appear individually different from the classic sonnet, the theme of love makes the poems analogous.
In Shakespeare’s first sonnet he declares his admiration and adoration towards this mans beauty, begging him to take pity on the world and reproduce to share with the rest of the world and generations to come his beauty that can be passed on through a child. He also compares in his 18th sonnet the beauty of another man with a summers day, stating that he is in fact more beautiful than a summer day because summer’s beauty ends and this mans beauty never will. It will forever be etched on paper in a poem Shakespeare has written. This shows his admiration and love toward these men, without any romantic or sexual interest. We can tell he has no sexual interest because he explains in sonnet 18 that mother nature got overly excited creating this perfect of a being, and added an extra part that was of no use to shakespeare. There is also no indication that these men have any personal connection to shakespeare, pushing away the idea of a love involving personality. Shakespeare’s story, Love Labour’s Lost, focuses the story on the endearing lust of men. Women are a powerful force, so in order to persuade them men will try to use a variety of different resources in order to attract the opposite sex. Men will often use their primal instincts like a mating call, which could equivocate today to whistling at a woman as she walks by. With the use of lies to tell a girl what she wants to hear, the musk cologne in order to make you appear more sensual, or the cliché use of the love poem, men strive to appeal to women with the intent to see his way into her heart. William Shakespeare is a man, who based on some of his other works, has a pretty good understand and is full of passion for the opposite sex. Nonetheless, whether it had been honest love or perverse lust, Shakespeare, along with most men, aimed to try to charm women. With keeping this understanding of Shakespeare in mind, his weapon of choice, to find his portal way into a woman’s heart, was his power of writing.

Sonnet 130 is Shakespeare’s harsh yet realistic tribute to his quite ordinary mistress. Conventional love poetry of his time would employ Petrarchan imagery and entertain notions of courtly love. Francis Petrarch, often noted for his perfection of the sonnet form, developed a number of techniques for describing love’s pleasures and torments as well as the beauty of the beloved. While Shakespeare adheres to this form, he undermines it as well. Through the use of deliberately subversive wordplay and exaggerated similes, ambiguous concepts, and adherence to the sonnet form, Shakespeare creates a parody of the traditional love sonnet. Although, in the end, Shakespeare embraces the overall Petrarchan theme of total and consuming love.
Much has been made (by those who have chosen to notice) of the fact that in Shakespeare's sonnets, the beloved is a young man. It is remarkable, from a historical point of view, and raises intriguing, though unanswerable, questions about the nature of Shakespeare's relationship to the young man who inspired these sonnets. Given 16th-Century England's censorious attitudes towards homosexuality, it might seem surprising that Will's beloved is male. However, in terms of the conventions of the poetry of idealized, courtly love, it makes surprisingly little difference whether Will's beloved is male or female; to put the matter more strongly, in some ways it makes more sense for the beloved to be male.
Shakespeare and Petrarch, two poets popular for their contributions on the issue of love, both tackle the subject of their work through sonnet, yet there are key contrasts in their style, structure, and in the way, each approaches their subjects. Moreover, it is clear that in "Sonnet 130," Shakespeare in fact parodies Petrarch's style and thoughts as his storyteller describes his mistress, whose "eyes are in no way as the sun" (Shakespeare 1918). Shakespeare seems, by all accounts, to mock the exaggerated descriptions expanded throughout Petrarch’s piece by giving an English poem portraying the speaker’s love in terms that are characteristic of a flawed woman not a goddess. On the other hand, Petrarch's work is full of symbolism. In reviewing "Sonnet 292" from the Canzoniere, through “Introduction to Literature and Arts,” Petrarch’s utilization of resemblance and the romanticizing of Petrarch's female subject are normal for the Petrarchan work. The leading major contrast between the two poems is the piece structure utilized (McLaughlin).
The majority of Elizabethan sonnets reflect two major themes: time and love. Along with these similarities come some differences among the gospels, suggesting that each gospel was written for a specific audience and for a specific purpose. This paper will examine the resurrection of Jesus, while identifying the significant differences between Mark, Matthew and Luke. This paper will also analyze the differences to suggest the prominent theological perspective each gospel author might be trying to convey about the resurrection of Jesus.
In Shakespeare’s sonnet 130, the speaker ponders the beauty, or the lack thereof, of his lover. Throughout the sonnet, the speaker presents his lover as an unattractive mistress with displeasing features, but in fact, the speaker is ridiculing, through the use of vivid imagery, the conventions of love poems and the way woman are portrayed through the use of false comparisons. In the end, the speaker argues that his mistress may not be perfect, but in his eyes, her beauty is equal to any woman who is abundantly admired and put through the untrue comparison.
