In this vast contemporary society, many voices go unheard. Our society struggles to break free from the problems it presents to us. Problems such as the environment, human rights, animal rights, and peace among nations continue to exist. Organizations such as Greenpeace, Sierra Club, and Amnesty are 3 of the biggest associations to help fight and put a cease to the world’s troubles.
Greenpeace is a non-profit organization, with a presence in 40 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific. Greenpeace exists because our fragile planet deserves a voice. It needs solutions, change, and action. To maintain its independence, Greenpeace doesn’t accept donations from governments or corporations but relies on contributions from individual supporters and foundation grants. As a global organization, Greenpeace focuses on the most crucial worldwide threats to our planet's biodiversity and environment.
They campaign to: Stop climate change, protect ancient forests, save the oceans, stop whaling, say no to genetic engineering, stop nuclear threats, eliminate toxic chemicals and encourage sustainable trade. Greenpeace has been campaigning against environmental dilapidation since 1971. They exist to expose environmental criminals, and to challenge government and corporations when they fail to live up to their mandate to safeguard our environment and our future. Greenpeace speaks for 2.8 million supporters worldwide, and encourages many millions more than that to take action every day. As one of the longest banners they've ever made summed things up, "When the last tree is cut, the last river poisoned, and the last fish dead, we will discover that we can't eat money..." Greenpeace is one of the strongest movements and is recognized by the media. Corporations find them as a nuisance because they are constantly campaigning. They influence the public through protests, rallies, banners and many different peaceful ways of gaining attention through the media. You can join their newsletter and support them whenever you’d like. They like to keep the public informed constantly as to what is occurring.
Sierra Club is about supporting different issues relating to helping the environment or people. They promote different issues relating to our society today. They encourage its supporters to take action. Such issues include: Telling the National Park Service to protect Padre Island National Seashore from natural gas drilling, Helping protect the wilderness experience on the Colorado River, Supporting an increase in family planning, Help break America's oil dependence, Stopping the Bush Administration's Anti-Environmental Trade
Throughout history there have been many white collar crimes. These crimes are defined as non-violent and financial-based crimes that are full ranges of fraud committed by business and government professionals. These crimes are not victimless nor unnoticed. A single scandal can destroy a company and can lose investors millions of dollars. Today, fraud schemes are more sophisticated than ever, and through studying: Enron, LIBOR, Albert Wiggan and Chase National Bank, Lehman Brothers and Madoff, we find how the culprits started there deception, the aftermath of the scandal and what our country has done to prevent future scandals.
Green washing: The disinformation disseminated by an organization so as to present an environmentally responsible public image. In order for big companies to stay on top of the market today, they are forced to think of advertising strategies to help their public image and advertise their product. Over the years the system has become very complex and also very questionable. Companies are willing to lie, change their logo, and sometimes even their company name just to keep their name and image clean in front of the public just to make sure that they are making their money. Green washing helps this by advertising to the public that they are environmentally supportive and responsible. Most people that are into buying “green products” do not even realize that the company they are buying from is green washing in some sort of way just so that they can attract attention to the public. Green washing companies may advertise that they are “eco-friendly”, but when it comes down to it, the facts hidden behind the curtains beg to differ. Just like in the green washing video we watched in class, the companies may look great compared to the worst companies, but that does not mean what they are doing is still productive for our environmental movement. One company that has been notorious for their green washing efforts for the past couple of decades is the Oil/energy company: British Petroleum a.k.a. Beyond Petroleum. They are one of the world’s largest leading oil companies who has also becoming a large energy supplying company with presence in petrochemicals, gas, and solar divisions. Over the past twenty years BP has been the cause of several deadly disasters in the oil business in the U.S. and around the world. Despite their green washing effor...
The Muslims could be said to have fought for land to increase their expansion of their empire. Mainly every Muslim participated to help defeat the opposing army and take control of the land. I think that the Muslims did this because they were very faithful and confident that their God, Allah, would help them. Women would even fight. Many times the opposing army outnumbered them though the Muslims usually defeated them. The Battle of Yarmuk that Document A describes is a good example that shows this. “By Allah’s help, some 70,000 of them [the Greeks] were put to death,” and “…certain Muslim women took part and fought
The Bernie Madoff Ponzi Scheme is a well-known case and is known as one of the biggest Ponzi scheme’s. In summary the scheme occurred for many reasons that I will some up into 3 points; A lack in competency by regulatory agencies, a lack of regulation, and finally a breach in ethics by Bernie Madoff himself. To explain further, the regulatory agencies like the lawyers and SEC are supposed to prevent schemes such as this one from happening but because they lacked the skills to correctly assess the situation, interpreting the number of tips they had received regarding scheme that had been filed, and to act on those in an efficient manner. One of the tips was made by Harry Markopolos in 2000, of who correctly predicted that Madoff was guilty of fraud. Even after this tip from Markopolos, Madoff was not arrested until 2009. Many family members were also a part of the fraud along with some non-family members such as Frank DiPascali and a team known as the 17th floor team, who helped Madoff carry out his fraud. The idea behind Madoff’s fraud was that he would produce false statements of their investments and when people wanted to pull out their investments, the money wasn’t actually there, which rightfully rose more than a few eyebrows and ultimately led to his arrest.
Bernard Madoff had full control of the organizational leadership of Bernard Madoff Investments Securities LLC. Madoff used charisma to convince his friends, members of elite groups, and his employees to believe in him. He tricked his clients into believing that they were investing in something special. He would often turn potential investors down, which helped Bernard in targeting the investors with more money to invest. Bernard Madoff created a system which promised high returns in the short term and was nothing but the Ponzi scheme. The system’s idea relied on funds from the new investors to pay misrepresented and extremely high returns to existing investors. He was doing this for years; convincing wealthy individuals and charities to invest billions of dollars into his hedge fund. And they did so because of the extremely high returns, which were promised by Madoff’s firm. If anyone would have looked deeply into the structure of his firm, it would have definitely shown that something is wrong. This is because nobody can make such big money in the market, especially if no one else could at the time. How could one person, Madoff, hold all of his clients’ assets, price them, and manage them? It is clearly a conflict of interest. His company was showing high profits year after year; despite most of the companies in the market having losses. In fact, Bernard Madoff’s case is absolutely stunning when you consider the range and number of investors who got caught up in it.
Bernie Madoff is one of the greatest conman in history. The Bernie Madoff scandal takes the gold as one of the top ponzi scheme in America. Madoff started the Wall Street firm, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, in 1960. Starting off as a penny stock trader with five thousand dollars, earned from his workings as a lifeguard and sprinkler installer, his firm began to grow with the support of his father-in-law, Saul Alpern, who helped by referred a group of close friends and family. Originally, his firm made markets by the National Quotations Bureau’s Pink Sheets. However, in order to compete with the bigger firms that were trading on the New York Stock Exchange floor, his firm started to use very intelligent computer software that help distributed their quotes in second’s rater then minutes. This software later became the NASDAQ that we know today. In December of 2008 Bernard Madoff confessed that he had embezzling billions of dollars from investors. It is estimated to have lasted nearly two decades, and stolen approximately $64.8 billion. On December 11, 2008 he was arreste...
“Fifty percent profit in forty-five days!” was the claim of Charles Ponzi. Ponzi was a purported financial wizard. In the summer of 1920, he ran an “investment company” in Boston. He claimed to reap great profits by trading postal reply coupons. Nonetheless, the investment scheme was a fraud. Ponzi was using investors' money to pay off earlier investors, while keeping some for himself. In the end, he had collected $9,500,000 from 10,000 investors.
The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has been helping to protect people and the environment they live in since 1970. They help get information out to the public about events that causes damage to the environment. They do this many ways, one of which they
Bernie Madoff, “a former American stock broker, investment advisor, non-executive chairman of the NASDAQ stock market, and the admitted operator of what has been described as the largest Ponzi scheme in the history of the world”. (Bernard Madoff, 2011, para. 1) Bernie was able to convince investors to give him large sums of money with the promise that they would received between eight percent to twelve percent return a year. Bernie ran a pyramid scheme where Bernie kept the large sums of money for himself, and then he used the new investors funds to pay off the o...
In addition to the individuals that use their wealth and influence to attempt to save the environment, there are also many individuals and organizations on the other side of the issue. These individuals and organizations are not necessarily anti-environment rather they are those who have a large stake in industries like manufacturing and fossil fuel energy or those who feel that the high initial cost of changing existing infrastructure and researching new technologies are not worth the eventual gains for the environment.
This is the biggest environmental organization with over three million contributors. Traditionally associated with the progressive movement, the club was one of the first large-scale environmental preservation organizations in the world, and currently engages in lobbying politicians to promote green policies. Recent focuses of the club include promoting sustainable energy, mitigating global warming, and opposing coal. Sierra Club their mission statement is "To explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; To practice and promote the responsible use of the earth's ecosystems and resources; To educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives." (www.sierraclub.org) This club has five reliable goals that are associated with this group. They are too, "achieve ambitiously and just climate solutions; explore, enjoy, and protect our nations lands, waters, air, and wildlife; engage and support a broad, diverse, inclusive, and powerful movement; become an ever stronger, high-performance organization" (sierraclub.org, 2017) They are currently wanting to solve the climate crisis, primarily through a successful transition to a resource-efficient, clean energy economy that better serves people and nature. To secure lands protection for public lands and waters, promote healthy ecosystems and communities, and fight for clean air and water. They also have the ambition to get people outdoors. To build a movement that is diverse and inclusive, that reflects and represents today's American public, and prioritizes important connections between environmental health and social justice (sierraclub.org). There are a couple different careers within the Sierra Club. An associate attorney, which helps coordinate all aspects
Hawken writes that the movement, a collective gathering of nonconformists, is focused on three basic ambitions: environmental activism, social justice initiatives, and indigenous culture’s resistance to globalization. The principles of environmental activism being closely intertwined with social justice rallies. Hawken states how the fate of each individual on this planet depends on how we understand and treat what is left of the planet’s lands, oceans, species diversity, and people; and that the reason that there is a split between people and nature is because the social justice and environmental arms of the movement hav...
This particular kind of scheme has been around for a long time dating back the 1920's. They are fraudulent investment operations , operated by a person or an organization, they promise significantly high return rates to investors to draw them in. They are able to pays returns to investors from new capital paid to the operators by new investors, rather than from proceeds obtained by the operator. The scheme was named after Charles Ponzi , who became notorious for using the technique in 1920's. Ponzi's became the first scheme to be widely known across America despite other schemes being done before, because the staggering number of money and people he defrauded. A wide variety of investment vehicles or strategies, usually legitimate, have become the basis of Ponzi schemes. For example, Hedge funds which can degenerate into ponzi schemes if they unexpectedly lose money or fail to properly earn the returns promised or expected by investors.
