The greenhouse effect and global warming are issues that are talked about by geologists all the time. The greenhouse effect is a natural process that keeps the earth at temperatures that are livable. Energy from the sun warms the earth when its heat rays are absorbed by greenhouse gasses and become trapped in the atmosphere. Some of the most common greenhouse gasses are water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane. If there were no greenhouse gasses, very few rays would be absorbed and the earth would be extremely cold. When too many rays are absorbed, the earth?s atmosphere starts to warm, which leads to global warming. Global warming can lead to many problems that affects the environment in which we live. In order to talk about global warming, we must first learn what causes the greenhouse effect. A lot of the rays from the sun are absorbed by water vapor that is naturally in our atmosphere. Water vapor accounts for ?80 percent of natural greenhouse warming. The remaining 20 percent is due to other gasses that are present in very small amounts? (Murck, Skinner and Porter 488). Carbon dioxide is also a big absorber of the sun?s heat rays. Humans can cause a lot of carbon dioxide to be released. Every time we burn fossil fuels, we release more carbon dioxide. Emissions from cars also increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. If there is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere more rays from the sun are absorbed. This will cause the atmosphere and the earth?s temperature to warm. The warming of the earth will cause the oceans to become warmer. When they heat up, more water is evaporated, causing more carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere. Once this process starts, it is extremely hard to control. If the temperature keeps rising, more carbon dioxide will be released. Another greenhouse gas is methane: ?Methane absorbs infrared radiation 25 times more effectively than carbon dioxide, making it an important greenhouse gas despite its relatively low concentration? (490). There have been many studies on how methane is released into the atmosphere. Methane in the atmosphere is ?generated by biological activity related to rice cultivation, leaks in domestic and industrial gaslines, and the digestive process of domestic livestock, especially cattle? (490). An environmental effect of global warming is the fact that higher temperatures will lead to a change in the water cycle. Some places may experience more rain. Warmer temperatures will cause a greater amount of evaporation from lakes, rivers, and oceans. In some areas this could be
...re absorbed by atmosphere. The remaining 40 % passes through the layers of the atmosphere and reaches the Earth’s surface. Fifteen percent of the rays are reflected by the Earth’s surface and the rest heat up the land and oceans. The Earth’s surface gives off heat radiation, where it is picked up and held by the greenhouse gases; such as, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases (Andrian09’s Blog). These “greenhouse gases make up only about 1 % of the Earth’s atmosphere; they regulate our climate by trapping heat and holding it in a kind of warm-air blanket that surrounds the planet” (West). Without an atmosphere, the Earth’s surface would be colder at night and become hotter during the day. The atmosphere’s main job is to regulate the temperature and secure the heat in Earth; so that the heat does not escape leaving the planet cold (King, 2008).
The author, Noah Smith, overlooks what I consider an important point about how many “gun deaths” are accidental or a suicide. As time has progressed on the amount of “gun deaths” have risen to 32,000 per year. This would leave the annual number of gun suicides at 22,500. The amount of suicides per year makes up well over half of the amount of gun deaths per year. Everything involving suicides are getting worse and something has to be done about it. Smith acknowledges that gun control have some gun control; however, most of the recent hysteria over gun deaths is misplaced according to
No one should depend on a machine in order to sustain their life. Being brain dead could be a heartbreaking and very emotional subject to discuss among family and friends. It is understandable that some people cannot grasp their loved one’s irreversible death, or understand how their heart is still beating yet their brain in unconscious, but dragging their life and binding their loved ones to be held to a life support machine can seem pretty selfish and careless on their part.
According to Mr. Steffen, “The primary cause of the observed changes in the Earth’s climate are human activities—mainly the burning of fossil fuels” (Steffen, 2013). The process of burning fossil fuel unleashes a huge amount of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, to the atmosphere, disturbing the balance of greenhouse gases in the nature. As stated by Slaght, “The accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to human activities will change th...
All in all, the pros of life support are far outweighed by the cons. A sustained life may sound positive; however, when a patient is on life support, the sustained life is consumed in discomfort and the quality of it is belittled. Ethicists alike are appalled that an officially classified deceased individual may further be inappropriately tested on, and the costs underwent by both the patient(s) and close friends and family alone during the duration of the treatment surely would discourage anyone from attempting to put a loved one, or be put on by a loved one, any form of medical treatment used for life support. After looking at the entirety of life support and what it is and is not capable of, ask yourself one question. “When is life support really “life support”?
The “greenhouse effect” has been a concern for many years now. One of the major gases that contribute to this warming effect is carbon dioxide. There have been many studies on the effect carbon dioxide has on the earth’s atmosphere and weather patterns and how carbon dioxide production from burning fossil fuels, generating electricity, making concrete, cutting trees, and other processes effects the atmosphere we live in. The goal of this paper is to identify some possible contributors of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States.
The major effect most scientists fear as the result of increased levels of CO2 in our atmosphere is global warming. By blocking the heat reflected from the Earth's surface, greenhouse gases are able to warm the planet in a similar way to how glass warms up a greenhouse. Without this greenhouse effect, it is calculated our planet would be 35 degrees Celsius cooler worldwide, causing oceans to freeze and greatly altering life (Doyle, 1996). Accordi...
A poem is usually developed by a certain method or a style that the poet uses to help the reader to understand the meaning of the poem. The poem Graded Paper written by the poet Mark Halliday, is about a teacher who is grading a student’s paper and giving feedback on it. In the poem the poet uses different techniques to support and develop the poem. In the poem, the teacher who is grading the paper uses special tone while grading the paper. The teacher is the poem uses a tone of caring and helpful to the student. Although, throughout the poem, the teacher gives negative comments to the student, at the end the teacher gives the student an A-. This is the irony that the poet uses in the poem. Another technique the author uses
When people burn fossil fuels to accumulate and produce energy a substance called carbon is produced. Carbon is released into the air in a form known as carbon dioxide. Carbon moves throughout the biosphere on the planet as it is recycled and reused. Carbon exists in the earth’s atmosphere in two common forms which are methane and carbon monoxide. These gases absorb and retain heat in a process known as the greenhouse effect. The Planets natural greenhouse effect makes life possible by regulating our temperature. It turns out that adding too much to the greenhouse effect can have horrible consequences on the environment. Each year, five and a half billion tons of carbon is released by burning fossil fuels and of that three billion tons enters the atmosphere. The remaining carbon usually gets absorbed by the oceans.
Most of the light energy from the sun is emitted in wavelengths shorter than 4,000
of the kinds of gases people release into the air comes from the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil

Normally, the solar radiation will pass through the atmosphere. Some of the solar radiation will absorb by the earth surface and the rest will reflect by the atmosphere. However, the greenhouse gas in the atmosphere will trap some solar radiation. As a result, the average temperature in the earth surface will be increase. Therefore, the greenhouse gas will cause the climate change.
The change in climate has been a topic of controversy across the world throughout the past years. Scientists have done research on how climate changes has changed throughout the years around the world. In the past few years, research shows that climate has changed dramatically in the world. Although climate change is something that occurs normally in nature, there has been substantial evidence that mankind is a contributor to the dramatic increase. Most countries around the world have got together to discuss how to reduce mankind’s contribution to climate change, but there is other countries that still do not consider this as a problem. Research conducted by scientists have supported the idea that climate
The major immigration dates were between 1990 and 2004 when there was a major increase in the population size. The immigration of the Italians soared from 780,000 to over two million or more in just that decade and a half. This cause was the war and their political life back home. Some examples of immigration statistics are: 2000- 473,338 1990- 580,592 1980- 831,922 1970- 1,008,533 1960- 1,256,999 1950- 1,790, 429 1940- 1,610,113 1930- 1,343,125 1920- 484,027 1910- 182,580.
