As the old saying goes, “an ounce of cure is worth a pound of prevention”. I believe that this is what the author thought of when choosing the title for this story. There is a lot of wisdom found in these words that is usually only realized after the fact. This reminds me of another old saying that I think also applies to this story – “Hindsight is twenty-twenty”. How many times have we thought, “if only I knew then what I know now”? Would we have made the same choices? This question is difficult to answer since we cannot change the past.
This story is about a teenage girl, whose first heartbreak leads to some rather unfortunate events. She tells us about her first love and her first kiss. “Two months, and a few amatory stages later, he dropped” her for a girl who was performing opposite him in a school play. Watching him with the other girl was more than she could bear and the night she went to see the play was “the beginning of months of real, if more or less self-inflicted, misery” for her. While baby-sitting one night, she made the fatal mistake of getting drunk. She then calls her best friend, who shows up with another girl and several boys, to help her with her situation. Before she was able to cover up the ill-fated events, the couple returned home unexpectedly. She then had to explain what happened to her mother. Her mother then buys a bottle of Scotch and goes to see the couple to discuss her daughter’s actions. She was forbidden to date again until she turned sixteen and she had to pay for the bottle out of her baby-sitting money. Her reputation suffered greatly until the fall, when another girl did something even more scandalous and people forgot about her. In the end, she discovered that she was completely over the boy and she learned a valuable lesson about how actions have consequences.
I found this story very enjoyable to read. I felt that the story was well written and conveyed a realistic insight into what some teenage girls experience. I, having once been a teenager, can relate to the girl in the story. Although I didn’t get drunk, I still recall my first love and the crushing heartache I felt when he broke up with me. People deal with rejection and disappointment in different ways, and sometimes we can use poor judgment.
Smashed: Story of a Drunken Girlhood is Koren Zailckas' account of life as an alcoholic. It traces her life from her first drink, when she was fourteen, to her last, at twenty-two; Smashed chronicles Zailckas' struggle with alcohol abuse, in an effort to explain the binge drinking phenomenon that plagues America's youth.

This anonymous girl is a normal fifteen year old teenager who just wants to be popular and fit in. In this book, she goes through many different so-called friends, or people who she thinks she likes. Many of her friends at first, were just plain ordinary kind of dorky kids and she wanted something new. She discovered a new crowd who she thought she could be popular with, but they only lead her to make the wrong decisions and to ditch the good friends that she had before. They brought her into the seductive world of drugs. She kept all of her secrets in her diary and she never thought to tell anyone. Not only did she hide it from her good friends, but also she hid it from her parents, who...
In my mind this particular short story has a very interesting meaning behind it. This meaning is one that many younger people such as myself would benefit most from. I think that the whole point of the story is that you shouldn't just rush along and always be in such a hurry.
One day I travelled in Italy, in there I met my new friend Patricia. She asked me if I had Facebook. This is my first time to heard Facebook, Since Facebook was blocked in China.I asked my friend what Facebook was. She told me that Facebook was a social media to contact with friends and make new friend. She asked me to create a new account in Facebook. I said:" Ok, I will create it right now." After creating Facebook, I liked chatting with friends in the messenger, sharing my life with my friends, reading interesting posts. I also made some new friends from Facebook. I thought that Facebook was a great invention. I did not have privacy awareness until I read this news. One day I read news as usual, one article grabbed my attention. It was
Social media companies have complete control a their users information and can do what they want with it. Now if those companies went spreading the information, no one would use their sites but they can make changes to privacy setting that make it easier for anyone to view information of other users. For example, Facebook has privacy settings so your information is not out for public viewing, but a while back they changed the default privacy setting to make all your information viewable to the public unless you changed it. There was an uproar and everyone felt they were trying to be sneaky about it because they did not give any notice when they did it, but Facebook claimed they were not trying to do anything fallacious. Social media companies have to be careful when doing anything with privacy settings because people get extremely defensive regarding their information. There is also a level of comfort that comes with age. The older generations have no trust when it comes to putting their information online. Most feel as if they are being tricked in some way. But the generation kids are growing up in now, all their trust is put in the internet. Kids and young adults will put all their information online because that is how the world functions. In today’s world, if you are not putting all your information online and using your phone and laptop to get everything done, you are inefficient. And this
In William Faulkner 's short story "A Rose for Emily", Faulkner brings attention to an elderly woman, Miss Emily in small-town Jefferson. Miss Emily was left with nothing but the house she had always lived in when her father passed away. With the death of her father, Emily 's life changes. The story is divided into five sections and begins with Miss Emily 's funeral, then switches over to talk about the new modern ideas and the requirements for Miss Emily. Miss Emily came from a wealthy family whom the colonel pardoned from paying their taxes. When new government officials came into office, they insisted Miss Emily pay her taxes, and she refused. This was not the only complaint townspeople had about Emily. The townspeople had multiple complaints about Miss
This story that I've created is called Why not me? The title is really just a metaphoric way of saying it's my time to shine. This story is about a teenager named boogie who is a very insecure kid but is in love with a girl named Nicole. In his mind, Nicole is way out of his league, so it's no way he'll ever be able to get a girls like her. What he doesnt know is that she has been crushing on him since elementary school. All of boogies's friends always tell him to "Man up and tell her " but we all know its not that simple for boogie. One day he finally takes a stand and says that he has had it with his insecurities and that he's going to tell Nicole how how he really feels and ask her to prom. Once Boogie tells his sister and friends they all
Over the past two decades there is a sudden rise in the social networking sites like Facebook, twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram etc. which is related to digital media. Today social networking is the best way to relax yourself after a stressful, hectic and boring day. It keeps track of all your activities, but if we are talking about social networking it does not go mutually with the privacy because social networking is more to deal with the sharing of videos ,photos, files etc. or we can say best way of communicating your thoughts and get connected with the world.
According to socialfish.org, the Facebook Privacy Policy is wanting users to automatically public display personal information such as user’s names, location, gender, and photographs, as well as social media activity such as “liked” pages and friends lists. Also, on Facebook when you message people on their messaging application people are allowed to see your location just by the click of the message that was sent. Even if you turn off the location setting on Facebook, the application still allows you to see it so you have to turn off the location button every time you send a message to someone if you do not want them to see your location is one example of our privacy being invaded. According to USA Today, research behavioral scientists shows that Facebook is a big issue with privacy and our every move is being watched from how parents interact with their kids to what we post or share. “Indeed, a University of Vienna study published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, found almost half of Facebook users who left the site said it was over privacy concerns”. Popular social media that we use daily such as Facebook, Google+, Wikipedia, and Yahoo have all changed their privacy policies recently. According to Forbes, “Facebook recently announced changes to its default privacy settings on sharing with friends, it was revealed also that it could access smartphone mics to capture and analyze the songs, TV shows and other things users
...nnor wrote the story The Life you save may be your Own the fate of the characters Mr. Shiflet saved his own life by leaving Lucynell in the diner; Mrs. Crater saved her own life by setting up Lucynell and Mr. Shiflet, and the title means you don’t always have to do the best thing for other people some time’s you do it for yourself. I know that in my essay it looks like the only thing this story is about is trying to get rid this girl because no one wants her, but I’m pretty sure that there is more to the story than that. This is a really influential quote for the title, but I feel as though the story could have been a little bit stronger when it comes to the details. There wasn’t really much that happened in the story until the very end. This quote really makes you think about saving lives and what you are doing for yourself and what you are doing for other people.
Facebook privacy and security have many benefits, problems, and challenges. There is a benefit for every security setting on Facebook but the real concern comes along when it comes to facing the problem and how this problem goes into different steps of challenges, and how we can fix that problem in order for privacy not to be a huge issue. A person that has access to Facebook wants to share their everyday moments to the world such as sharing personal posts, photos and videos, and that’s what Facebook is basically known for.
For centuries women have fought to obtain basic civil rights and today, they are still fighting to obtain equal rights. From the right to vote to their right to birth control, women have always been trying to assert their own independence in order to expand their freedom. While much progress has been made, there is still room for improvement. However, the evolution of women’s rights and the role of women is mirrored in literature and can be used to illustrate the progression throughout history. Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex is no different. Through the character Jocasta, Sophocles creates a counterpart to Oedipus and uses her to reveal the oppression of women by contrasting her and Oedipus’ relationships and reactions to the prophecy. Throughout the play Oedipus Rex, Sophocles illustrates Jocasta’s vulnerability and supportive nature in order to women as fragile, doting, and obedient wives and mothers to facilitate the necessity of self-assertion.
...tentially be cured with a one surgery. He uses this story of death to share that life is short. “Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by Dogma. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” He uses repetition and parallelism to drive his message home.
...o end up together and run away alone but I think this did make for a better story. I would certainly recommend this to my classmates because it is very entertaining and an easy read. I really enjoyed reading it because I could relate to certain aspects of the story and I think my classmates could as well.
