Characters and Symbols in The Glass Menagerie
In The Glass Menagerie, the main characters are Laura, Amanda, Tom, Jim, and Father. Each character can be found with symbols that best represent them. Laura 's two symbols are Blue Roses and her glass menagerie, Unicorn. Amanda 's yellow dress and bathrobe can express her love she has of the past event. Tom 's symbols are the movies and merchant marine. Jim's symbolize itself as a gentlemen caller for Laura. The Father 's portrait portrays his abandonment of the Wingfield family.
Laura is a hypersensitive young girl. She spends all of her time in a world of glass ornaments and stayed in her apartment. Even though she tries several times to participate in the outside world, she is too fragile. The Blue Roses represent the uniqueness of Laura. Blue Roses do not exist in this world or even if there is, it is not by nature. This rose is different from other roses just as Laura is different from other girls.
The color blue represents the sadness and depression. Laura felt these feelings at home because she is not as popular as Amanda and she cannot succeed in college that Amanda hopes her to be. Amanda's expectation caused Laura to feel bad when she does not meet her requirements. Laura had dropped out of Rubicam Business College and she can not find any gentleman caller. Roses represent Laura along with her beauty and innocence. The stem of the rose can define as the support that Amanda and Tom gave her. The thorn is her shyness. It is her shyness that no one wants to go near her and she does not want to go near anyone.
The Glass Menagerie represents Laura' hypersensitive nature and fragility. Laura is just as easily broken as a glass unicorn and just as unique. When Jim accidentally bumps into the unicorn and breaks it, the unicorn is no longer unique. When Jim kisses Laura and then shatters her hopes by telling her he is engaged, she becomes broken-hearted and less unique. The innocence that made Laura so unique is now lost. Both Laura and the glass menagerie break when they are exposed to the outside world. When Laura gives Jim her broken unicorn, it symbolizes her broken heart that Jim will take with him when he leaves. She gives Jim a little bit of herself to take with him and he leaves behind a little bit of himself with her shattered horses.
In the beginning of Billy Elliot & Strictly Ballroom both Fran & Billy are seen as very underdeveloped & can be seen as ugly ducklings in many ways, Billy is seen at the boxing hall going to his boxing classes stands out & is different from all the other boys there, he gets teased & mocked before he even goes in & even when he starts boxing in the ring, he does something completely unexpected & different which people do not approve of & in with his own personal acts to box, fails & gets knocked to the ground in failure. It is then seen that his father is very disappointed in him, & his coach even says to him that "you're a disgrace to this boxing club, you're a disgrace to your father & a disgrace to those gloves" this shows the extent of disapproval that people have of Billy also in these first scenes we see that Billy looks very intimidated & not very happy at all, also he is wearing old clothes & does not look very good. When Billy is seen in the ballet class for the first time he really stands out & looks very out of place as he is wearing boxing clothes while everyone else is wearing ballet clothes, also Billy is the only boy among many girls which makes him stand out. When he does ballet for the first time he is always out of place & doing all the wrong movements at the wrong times, this shows us that he does not fit in & it is unpleasant to watch also by looking at what Billy wears we see that all the...

"God put us here on the carnival ride, we close our eyes never knowing, where it will take us" (Wheel of the World quoted In "Biography"). Those were the words of Wheel of the World that inspired Carrie Underwood to write her latest album. At only 13 years old, she recorded her first album ("Carrie Underwood Biography"). Underwood also participated in several different competitions around the US to prepare herself to audition for American Idol in 2004 ("Biography"). After winning this contest, she continued to stay humbly as her fame grew. Her contributions to country music are demonstrated by her career and proves beyond a doubt that the Country Music Hall of Fame should induct this singer. She has shown her value through her major works, charities and influences, and professional morals.
Hate crimes should not be punished differently than other crimes. The actual crime should be punished, not the reasoning behind it. The idea of punishing crimes differently based on victims might make some people or groups feel that others are more protected or valued than they are. The concept of punishing crimes differently because of motive is senseless, unnecessary, and an injustice.
Georges Pierre-Seurat was born December 2, 1859 in Paris, France. He grew up with his brother, Emile, and his sister, Marie-Berthe. His mother, Ernestine (Faivre), came from a wealthy family while his father, Antoine-Chrysostome Seurat was a lawyer. Seurat began attending a local art school in 1875. He was taught by the sculptor Justin Lequien. From 1878 through 1879, Georges Seurat was enrolled at the famous Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Besides Lequien, “he studied under the artist Henri Lehmann as well” (A+E Networks). Seurat visited the Forth Impressionist Exhibition and was inspired by the Impressionist painters. “The little group of neo-impressionists was soon augmented by new adherents in France and also in Belgium where the exhibition of the Vingt had made the work of Seurat widely known among artists” (Questia). He was also fascinated by the science behind art. He also wanted to show off his talent and the technique he used which was very unusual. He used a technique known as pointillism, or divisionism. Seurat was very different from other artists and he showed his personality through his art...
Did you know that most of the plays written and performed in twentieth century America where based off of what was happening in the world at that time? The Great Depression, new inventions, and The Great War influenced the ideas of plays. The twentieth century American history takes a role in the ways of life in The Glass Menagerie which is set after the Great Depression in the late 1930’s.
It is estimated that 1 out of every 5,600-7,700 boys ages 5-24 have Duchene or Becker muscular dystrophy. (“Data & Statistics,” 2012 April 6) Muscular dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases defined by muscle fibers that are unusually susceptible to damage. There are several different types of muscular dystrophy some of which shorten the affected person’s lifespan. (“Muscular dystrophy: Types and Causes of each form,” n.d.) There is a long history of the disorder but until recently there wasn’t much knowledge of the cause. (“Muscular Dystrophy: Hope through Research,” 16 April 2014) Symptoms are obvious and can be seen as soon as a child starts walking. (“Muscular Dystrophy,” 2012 January 19) Although muscular dystrophy mostly affects boys, girls can get it too. (“Muscular Dystrophy,” 2012 January 19) There is no cure for muscular dystrophy but there are several types of therapy and most types of muscular dystrophy are still fatal. There is a stigma surrounding seeking help for mental illness that needs to be broken. Mental illness is not to be taken lightly, it is a serious matter. These people need genuine help; help that they should be able to seek without having to worry about repercussions.

...s, this does little to rebuilt a shatter economy and political system, though. The government is still plagued with corruption, but President Kabbah, a good man who was elected by the people, is doing his best to deal with it and restore order. Almost 90% of Sierra Leone’s debt was forgiven, but a ban of diamond mining has yet to be lifting making it difficult to pay off any debt or rebuilt the country. It was obviously a very complex war, and if you break it down by individual involved you can see how their actions were not that terrible within itself. The whole situation escalated into something no one wanted, but at the same time, no one was prepared to compromise for the situation to improve. With so many people being moved from their homes, and such horrible atrocities being done it will be a long time before the mental and physical scars heal in Sierra Leone.
The 1997 film Taste of Cherry by Abbas Kiarostami is one of ambiguity in a number of ways, the vagueness and openness of the films content results in an array of possible interpretations; the film has likewise been ambiguous in the responses and evaluation it draws. This essay shall examine two of these responses and interpretations, namely those of Hamish Ford and Jonathan Rosenbaum, whilst postulating that the Humanist view proposed by Rosenbaum is the more pertinent of the two. This shall be expanded upon by closely examining the epilogue (coda) and final scene of the film.
The first reason that I think commercial surrogate motherhood is valid is for the situation of when a mother can not become fertile herself. According to WebMd, infertility is the inability to get pregnant after a year of unprotected sex. While looking on WebMd, I found many reasons this type of situation can happen. One reason women can become infertile is the damage to the fallopian tubes. These tubes carry the eggs to the uterus. Infections and surgeries can lead to the damage of these tubes. Hormonal issues can also be a leading cause of infertility. Some women have ovulation problems, whe...

Globalization is becoming one of the most controversial topics in today’s world. We see people arguing over the loss of a nation’s cultural identity, the terror of westernization, and the reign of cultural imperialism. Through topics such as these we explore the possibilities or the existence of hybridization of cultures and values, and what some feel is the exploitation of their heritage. One important aspect that is not explored is that such influences can also be more than just a burden and an overstepping of bounds. These factors can create an educational environment as well as a reaffirmation of one’s own culture.
Shopping is something that has to be done whether you enjoy it or not to get essentials needed. We all go places where merchandize is being sold for a specific reason. Whether you go to the mall, shopping centers, or your local grocery store, you 'll always encounter many types of shoppers. Shopping isn’t always as fun as it sounds to everyone, but it is something we often do. This is the only way we get products we need, by personally buying them. You have three main shoppers including impulse buyers, list makers, and bargain hunters.
