Victim - Original Writing
Such odd patterns the rain made on the wet window. It had been pouring
for nearly an hour now; Rachel found it quite relaxing. She sat on the
couch watching some stupid talk show about people who had been
victimized by con artists. She shook her head slightly, sighed, and
stirred her tea. Rising while holding the mug perfectly still, she
went into the kitchen to empty what remained of her Earl Grey. Upon
her return, she remembered that she had left the window in her room
open. Earlier that night, she had been sitting by that very window;
the rain felt cool and clean on her rosy cheeks. Rachel cursed
herself for leaving it partly open, which allowed water to cover a
small portion of her bedspread. "Oh well. It will be dry in a while."
She said, not to anyone in particular as she was alone in the house,
after all.
There was one person too many in the house when he sprang from the
closet. The man really didn't look dangerous. His plain white shirt
and black jeans did not appear threatening. His uncombed brown hair
and lean build did not startle Rachel. Even his hazel eyes, empty as
they were, did not alarm her. It was the butcher knife he gripped in
his right hand that chilled her blood. "Little girls like yourself
shouldn't be home alone. They might get hurt or killed or….." He
sprang at her with the deadly blade, forcing her to the ground. She
screamed from both fear and sheer surprise. He held the knife to her
throat with one hand and began to unbutton her cream-colored blouse
with the other.
Rachel struggled violently, yelling, "Get off of me, you sick weirdo!"
He only grinned and continued. She clawed his right arm with her
pointy nails, breaking the skin. He shrieked and dropped his weapon.
Rachel quickly snatched it in her right hand while her attacker was
briefly injured. She then sliced him across the hand, shoving him off
Her next story begins the same way as the first. This time she describes the rapist. She makes you believe that all rapists are lonely depressed guys who feel that their last resort in getting ?some? is to rape a female. So being the kind hearted victim that she is she advised him that he got a makeover he wouldn?t have to go around raping everyone.
A victim advocate is someone who helps people who are victims of a crime or sexual abuse. They are usually only referred to as victim advocates, however they can be called victim coordinators, victim specialists, or victim service providers.
effective at holding perpetrators accountable. The nation, military, and criminal justice system has shifted from victim focus to offender focus. The historical development of the crime victims’ movement has altered perceptions of crime and the treatment of crime victims. Over the last three decades, the crime victims’ movement has emerged as a powerful source of social, legal, and political change. The women’s movement, as well as the law and order movement, led more directly to the emergence of a clearly defined crime victims’ movement. The history of this movement is divided into six stages, each denoting new developments in victim involvement and services, changes in service providers’ attitudes, new theoretical concepts, and ongoing legal
The differences between a victim and a creator is the level of responsibility. A victim prefers to blame other because they don’t want to take responsibility for the mistakes that they made. An example of a victim uses defender strategies. For example, when you are failing a class, and you just give up and stop trying and instead of working harder you blame the teacher or other people, and then you start saying things like “ that teacher sucks at teaching”, and you just start saying negative thing of other people and sometimes yourself, sometimes you even critisize yourself and thats the inner critic mindset. On the other hand a creator has a much more clearer mindset and is not sucked into the victim category so easily. An example of a
It was one of the first stages to provide for the needs of victims (Woulhter et al., 2008). The Victims Charter 1996 again offered minute legal obligation adjusting its attention away from the victim rights to the services that will be accessible from specific organisations. The two legislations were effective in raising victim issues but lacked any enforceability nonetheless it set the foundations in collaborating with victims. However in 1999, The Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act enforced special measures in criminal proceedings by protecting vulnerable witnesses when testifying. In doing so this legislation encouraged witnesses to testify. Historically in the United Kingdom such laws were limited. A significant change politically was the introduction of The Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act
“I was dragged to a fence covered in leaves, and they took the blindfold off. I could see the other girls bleeding and sobbing in pain. I saw an old woman holding a knife so sharp I could see the drops of blood sliding down the edge. It was the blood of the other girls. Three other women were holding down my arms and legs, and another was sitting right on my chest, covering my mouth. They try to put pressure on you, so you don 't cry for the next girl to hear. I can still feel the weight of her today. I can still visualize all their faces as I talk about this. I can see what each one of them looks like and the emotions that they had — so empty, like they didn 't see me as a human being. The cutting happens very fast. What the cutter does is
According to the article “Black Men as Criminals and as Victims” Black men are victimized in America when discussions of diseases fail to mention that “African-American men are more likely to be infected with the AIDS virus and twice as likely to suffer from prostate cancer and heart disease than are white men” (313). The reading also mentions that black men get payed less, although a black man may have a college education they only earn as much as a white man with a high school diploma which is crazy. Another way black men are victimized is through the media constantly covering violent crimes of black men robbing, raping, or being involved in a homicide, the media likes to cover stories where whites are the victims when in reality black men have a much bigger chance of being a victim. “A black man is about eighteen times more likely to be murdered than is a white woman” (315). And “for black men between the age of fifteen and thirty, violence is the single leading cause of death” (315).
Everyone is affected by crime, whether they are a direct victim, a family member or the victim’s friend. It can interfere with individual’s daily life, their personal sense of safety and their ability to trust others.
Victim facilitation pertains to property crimes where a victim inadvertently or carelessly makes it easier for a thief to steal (Karmen, 2016). Furthermore, victim facilitation pertains to crimes like auto thefts, burglary, and identity thefts (Karmen, 2016). Therefore, victim facilitation can be compared to the situational crime prevention theory, since the victims of these crimes are enhancing the physical environment and opportunities needed for these property crimes to occur (Bohm & Vogel, 2011). Thus, the level of blameworthiness associated with victim facilitation is significant, because the victim negligently assists the offender in the commission of the crime (Karmen, 2016). Subsequently, reverting back to the situational crime prevention theory, victimization occurs because citizens do not emplace simple deterrence techniques to increase offender's risk of being arrested (Bohm & Vogel, 2011). For example, if victims of motor vehicle thefts did not leave their keys in the ignition, the city of Nashville would experience
Business firms are not excused for criminal offenders to commit crimes against other people. It is one of the reasons why to create a preventive risk reduction plan especially to business establishment like gasoline stations. But naturally speaking, criminals handle these stations in group of two to four. At times, a female co-worker of crime or male disguised may shore up. Gas stations to be seen on roads in out-of-the-way part or less frequented highways are attacked, usually at night time. (Montojo 2007)

When I was merely thirteen years old, my boyfriend never seemed to comprehend the word no. But I never seemed to comprehend that I was capable of leaving him and escaping the relationship that brought nothing but destruction and desolation to my life. Out of fear, I stayed. And I stayed. And I stayed. For three and a half years, I was unable to build up the courage to break away and live my own life the way I craved. For three and a half years, I felt so depressed and alone that I even considered ending my own life.
Victimology is the scientific study of victimization and is an issue that affects millions of Americans each year. Anyone is at risk to be general target, but some people share similar traits and many criminologists seek to explain the facts that define the relationship between offender and the victim. This involves the study or investigation into the relationship type and level between the offenders and the victims of the crimes (Hagan, 2013). It works to create linkage between the criminal justice system and the victim to become a voice to advocate and secure justice for the victim. Most often violent crime is planned and executed by a person who is close to the victim. Victims are placed into four categories of victimization; The Victim
In order to define what victim’s facilitation, precipitation, and provocation terms; therefore, there would have to be some explanation as to who is considered a victim of crime. A victim is a person who suffered from a crime directly, mentally, physically, and financially. Anyone can become a victim or an offender of a crime. Victims were rarely recognized in the laws and policies that the governors of our nations fail to realize until 1970's. (Schmalleger & Smyklar, 2015) The legislation was too busy trying to make out if victims had rights in law as it relates to crime. Like always the government does not enforce or pass new laws unless someone petitions to sue. Consequently, victimologists and criminologists researchers suggest that specific
Module seven gave me a better understanding on the impact of crime on victims and society. When crime is committed it affects everyone around whether is the crime victims, their families and friends, and communities. “A victims is a person that has suffered direct physical, emotional, or pecuniary harm as a result of the commission of a crime”. (2WEB). Violent crimes are different because crime victims have a more difficult rime coping than property crime victims. Society now days is difficult as well as different, we see shootings, burglaries, kidnapping, assaults, drunk driving and other crimes is daily basis. Overall, crime affects society whether is physically, mentally, or financially.
