Controversies over Video Games Why video games are beneficial Controversies over video games centre on debates around the content of such video games and the potential to impact the user’s attitude and behaviour negatively. Commonly, people misinterpret the flippant debates as facts and believe that video games do in fact have a negative impact. Many people strongly believe that video games have a bad effect on children’s education, social development and psychological well-being. This is simply not the case. In fact, there is actually more evidence to suggest that video games have a positive impact on players. Video games on the market today such as are already evidently helping people learn, even without them knowing. Nintendo’s Brain Training is a great example as competition within the game keeps the player focused on learning, just 20 minutes each day can improve test score by 50% and prevent dementia. Both non-violent and violent video games are very likely to be how people teach and learn in the future. Video games are unlike anything else. They have the ability to gain the full attention of the player by immersing them in a virtual world. The call of duty series has done this very well and there is no wonder 125 million copies have been sold making 5 billion pounds. The game itself also has astonishing visual effects and is the reason why it won the Visual Effects Society Awards in 2010 and 2013. In this world the user can be made to experience different environments which can help in learning and perfecting techniques. These environments could be altered to train a doctor, a fire fighter or even teach someone to drive. It is about time that they opened their eyes and see the potential that video games possess. Perhaps, in time, they will experience the benefits of video games for themselves.
