All films ever made obtain certain elements that allow it to belong to a particular category of movie, or genre. These elements are already decided before the film is made, as the director can’t all of a sudden change his mind in the middle of production and change it from a comedy to a suspense thriller. Movie genres allocate disparity to audiences and let people choose what field of moviemaking most titillates their interests.
Borat is a film made with the sole purpose of being presented as a comedy. The movie picks apart tons of American-minded stereotypes and has the main character, Borat Sagdiyev, over exaggerate in reenacting or retelling them for one hell of a funny movie. The main elements of the film are all intended to be seen by an audience with a solid sense of humor. In this film, Borat introduces the audience to a whole new level of comedy. By making fun of one of America’s iconic figures, Pamela Anderson by calling her a whore after finding out she’s not a virgin, Borat emphasizes his attitude toward sexist views. He also has many “gay” encounters with other very hairy men. He tries to kiss the manager of the rodeo in Virginia who believes gays should be hanged. These are facets of comedy that are very much appreciated by today’s everyday moviegoer.
Borat does things that the normal American doesn’t have the balls to do, and the audience loves to see the unsuspecting victims’ reactions. He gawked at an attractive woman walking on the sidewalk and very bluntly asked “Very nice, very nice, how much?” Borat openly asks a random woman on the street how much he would have to pay her for sex, representing that this is and okay thing to do in Kazakhstan. This is something nobody would ever say because it’s a complet...

...hich takes them to the scene of the naked wrestling match in the conference room. They separate from this point, and Borat’s best friend is forever lost.
At some point in his excursion, Borat ceases to have any money to allow him to have a place to sleep, forcing him to camp out on the grounds of a church entrance with a mediocre campfire for warmth. He is shut down of his pride and feels like he has nothing left to keep him going. He lost his friend, he has no money, and he terminated his overwhelming love for Pamela Anderson-a true tragedy in the audiences’ eyes.
Borat is a film of epic proportions. It won’t cease to continue to be a real marvel of comedy, an appealing documentary, and a heartrending tragedy. The audiences have spoken and the ultimate success of the movie has will forever be chased by copycats, although none will reach the top like Borat did.
Bateman has no interest in the music he listens to, and even goes on page long monologues discussing the discography of Whitney Houston or Genesis, all of which sound as if they were taken straight from a review out of a New York Times article. Bateman constantly talks of how he loves the popular commercial music, how he obtains reservations at luxurious restaurants, how he has hundreds of Armani suits, and ironically enough delivers a liberal speech stressing how equal rights for women and minorities should be implemented into society, a quite funny contradiction. Bateman masks himself as a typical yuppie in a successful attempt to fit into society, though it is redundant. Bateman does not even need to fabricate his taste, he blatantly talks of “dissecting girls” “Stabbing you (a woman) to death then playing around with [her] blood” and needing to commit many other murderous
I feel like if I was able to tell people what the jest of the jokes were while watching people would appreciate the play a bit more than if they didn’t know anything about it. Overall though this is a great Broadway adaption from nothing pretty much, and Will Ferrell really solidifies his role as one of the world’s funniest actors and comedians at the same time. Looking back, America was a good place and we were pretty safe after 9/11, it was great looking back on those eight years of his presidency, and we can only hope the next president can deliver something special
How the genre influences the viewer depends of the viewer. Some people watch a movie to learn or study. While others can watch the same movie for entertainment purposes. The way a movie is interpreted by the viewer is completely dependent on how the viewer experiences the film. Comedy movies make you happy and laugh. While horror movies make you cringe in fear. Genre can influence the viewer on many levels. It just depends on the reason the person is watching the film for in the first place.
Anticipation, suspense, tension, excitement - these words come to mind when we think of the genre, Thriller. According to The Script Lab, thriller’s aim is “to keep the audience alert and on the edge of their seats” (Buffam, 2015). In these movies the main character, or the protagonist, is faced with a problem - whether it being a mystery, an escape or a mission. Just like every other genre in the film industry, Thrillers also contain a few sub-genres - but the main focus of every Thriller film out there it will always underline the menace that the hero faces.
Film scholars around the world agree that all genres of film are part of the “genre cycle”. This cycle contains four different stages that a specific genre goes through. These stages are: primitive, classic, revisionist, and parody. Each stage that the genre goes through brings something different to that genre’s meaning and what the audience expects. I believe that looking at the horror genre will be the most beneficial since it has clearly gone through each stage.
In the short story “Being There”, by Jerzy Kosinski, there are multiple examples of satire that are displayed throughout both the book and the movie. A few of them are: media, death, politics, and racism. The satire of the media was very similar in the book and the movie. Media played a big role in society and still does to this day.
The film exhibits American issues of 1920s chauvinism as Jack, slowly adopting the bigots' life philosophies, attempts to join an “exclusive and eternal Fourth of July costume party where the whiskey flows free of charge” (Smith 302). Slowly losing his sanity, the father enters a conversation with the ghost of a previous caretaker in the bathroom; they discuss his interest in joining the party, when the apparition asks why his son, Danny, “brought an outside party into [the Hotel]” (302). Referencing an African-American man Danny sent to save himself and his mother, Wendy, from his murderous father, Jack realizes that he must “shed his enlightened liberal schoolteacher/writer personality and adopt the racist views....[of] wealthy, white, pre-Depression and pre-World War II American [males]” by killing the savior (302). He later succeeds, murdering the man en route to hunting down his son and wife. Furthermore, in the same conversation, Jack shows his narrow views as he references Wendy by calling her “the old sperm bank” (Metz 55). After his wife mentions a mysterious woman in one of the hotel rooms, the man seems inte...
...Latinos and European Americans that goes beyond superficial jokes? It is a contemporary and insightful exploitation of today's diversity issues, yet it does contain a noticeable exclusion. There are no black lead characters. For a show that addresses diversity issues, this is an apparent elephant in the room. I believe it is because it is easier to write affirming comedy about gays, latinos, youth, and older people, but not racial issues. It would very difficult to to make comedy of racial issues because white privilege is a very serious occurrence. The total avoidance of it, just reflects how race is still a tricky subject in the United States.
One of the fundamental aspects that determine the genre of a film is the iconography and the
Films that are classified as being in the film noir genre all share some basic characteristics. There is generally a voice-over throughout the film in order to guide the audience's perceptions. These movies also involve a crime and a detective who is trying to figure out the truth in the situation. This detective usually encounters a femme fatale who seduces him. However, the most distinctive feature of the film noir genre is the abundance of darkness.
In Hollywood today, most films can be categorized according to the genre system. There are action films, horror flicks, Westerns, comedies and the likes. On a broader scope, films are often separated into two categories: Hollywood films, and independent or foreign ‘art house’ films. Yet, this outlook, albeit superficial, was how many viewed films. Celebrity-packed blockbusters filled with action and drama, with the use of seamless top-of-the-line digital editing and special effects were considered ‘Hollywood films’. Films where unconventional themes like existentialism or paranoia, often with excessive violence or sex or a combination of both, with obvious attempts to displace its audiences from the film were often attributed with the generic label of ‘foreign’ or ‘art house’ cinema.
According to Dictionary.com, genre is defined as “a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, technique.” Genre is a tool used to generate a clear idea of what a movie will be about. It helps producers create an outline to engage their target audience and ensure similarities in the narrative elements. In the reading by Rick Altman he says, “Stephen Neale expresses the commonly held opinion when he says that ‘each new genre film constitutes an addition to an existing generic corpus and involves a selection from the repertoire of generic elements available at any one point in time’” (Altman 1999). This quote describes exactly what the genre romantic comedies consist of. The genre stems from two obvious sources, romance films and comedy films, and it takes elements from each genre to create a whole new spin on films. Romantic comedies are light-hearted, humorous, and dramatic movies with the portrayal that “true love” comes from human relationships in an ordinary life. This genre has been popular to audiences from the early years of film making because it allows people to believe that relationships and situations depicted in these movies could happen to them. It is also popular for producers because of the ability to construct a film that is known to make a hit at the box offices on a low budget. Rick Altman says, “Current understanding of genre depends on the assumption that generic terms and concepts are few, neat, and clear” (Altman 1999). The basic structure of these films first portrays the unfulfilled desire of love in the lives of the main characters, next comes a situation that they are put in that provides a chance for potential romance, and then though several obstacles the protagonist realiz...
A genre is a type or category of film (or other work of art) that can be easily identified by specific elements of its plot, setting, mise en scène, character types, or style. (Goodykoontz, 2014) The gangster film is a sub-genre of the broader genre of crime film. A genre main objective is to classify the depiction of entertainment. The genre of my movie is a gangster film. My movie I chose was Scarface. Directed by Brian De Palma. An update of the 1932 film, Scarface (1983) follows gangster Tony Montana and his close friend Manny Ray from their trip on the Cuban Boat Lift for refugees to their arrival in Miami. (Scarface, 1983a)
For many people comedy simply means getting a laugh out of something, but in reality, comedy can be used for more than that. Due to its volatility, stand-up comedy tends to draw criticism for being offensive and for spreading negative stereotypes. This, however, is a sign of social progress because it means that comedians are pushing social boundaries. Stories and expressions that are normally unacceptable are met with laughter and agreement when they are told on stage (Cohen 2). The fact that the content is sugar-coated in humor makes it easier to digest matters that are often looked at as being taboo. When the audience laughs at such taboo subjects it leads them to seek out and explore those subjects. When thinking about a comedian that talk about controversial topics, one comedian stands out the most in my mind and that is Dave Chappelle. Chappelle used his voice to challenge audiences to see the world from his perspective and discuss the institutional racism that African Americans faced in American society. The Chappelle Show served as a channel for his audience to navigate racism and racial
In fact, English speakers in America clearly differ from those in Britain by tone, delivery, and expression. Since the language differs in these ways based on its local use, it is understandable why the two countries’s humor differ as well. America’s obvious slap-stick and Britain’s blunt irony, differ between their own individual standards, just like their versions of the English language, and continue to change with time. In comparison to the humor used by Hollywood’s original actors in the early fifties, the comedies we are currently exposed to on television today has changed drastically.
