Teaching Physical Education in an elementary school can be a rather difficult task. Even when the subject of PE is brought up in a casual conversation the general response is something to the effect of “all you do is roll the balls out and watch the kids play.” If the teacher does not keep things interesting, class participation will fall by the wayside.
There are many ways to combat this lack of understanding in PE. The teacher must always be able to relate classroom activities to the real world, higher order thinking must be involved and there must be an effective use of technology to keep students active. Effectively using technology in the classroom the teacher will be able to facilitate active learning by engaging students in PE activities only imagined by other people.
When a teacher is willing to apply anything new to their classroom it is important to have a clear understanding of scope and sequence. Scope and sequence is vital in whole school planning and in the planning of individual learning sequences. Consideration of scope includes decisions about what is significant and manageable. Consideration of sequence includes decisions about what is necessary for sequential development of both skills and concepts
In PE as well as other classes it is important for a teacher to have a list of standards visible to ensure that the technologically integrated lessons are aligned with both state and federal standards. One must also be sure that higher order thinking skills are being developed through both the transfer and assessment of such material.

While some students and schools have greater advantages over others, it is up to the teachers and students to maximize their efficiency and use their available resources with regards to technology wisely. By encouraging technological developments in our schools and classrooms both teachers and students will benefit. When technology is implemented it is important that it is used correctly and be in direct correlation with the state and federal standards. If technology is used improperly it can be extremely counter productive and have a negative impact on the development of scope and sequence.
This essay highlights the new nation wide curriculum values movement in physical education classes and the propositions it has to maintain and support engagement and development. Through effecting teaching strategies such as Mosston’s spectrum and identifying a holistic approach to valuing movement in the curriculum. Teachers can work towards creating supporting learning environments to cater for all students, and promote total student engagement.
The purpose of this research is to first define physical education. Then, I will explore the history of P.E. In the following section, I will compare and contrast the PE curriculum from past to present. Next, a description of the schooling requirements to become a physical education teacher will be given. Finally, I will share a reflection of my experience with an actual Physical Education teacher. Being a P.E teacher is the career I want, so why not research and get ahead on things?
Educators must be able to work with a learner to identify interests and then set out learning goals. Content must be relevant to the learner, integrated across subject domains and reflect real-world issues, must facilitate acquisition of skills and knowledge, must build metacognitive and technological capacity, nurture independence, and promote collaboration (Saavedra & Opfer, 2012).
However, in order for physical education to be part of daily curriculum, the schools would need proper equipment. Each grade level would have to share equipment recommended for PE time only. Teachers could have separate play equipment in their classrooms for use at recess.
Active participation involves pair work, group work, building models, mind mapping, brainstorming and role play. The teacher is rarely stands at the front, but is moving around the room, listening watching and supporting students in day to day practice.
The value of physical education P.E. teachers bring to schools and their students. P.E. has an effect on everyday life. With this in mind I feel P.E. is highly valuable. Physical education activities have development in mind. Children can participate in a variety of activities and are encouraged to achieve overall wellness by continuously staying active.

Demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy is important and must be embedded in planning, because in order to be a great teacher you need to know what you are teaching and the best way to teach it to your students. If an instructor does not possess a deep knowledge of what they are teaching it will be difficult to successfully engage students in discussion, promote questioning, and answer their questions. Teachers with a strong knowledge of the content they are teaching are able to present new information by linking it to previous information, address misconceptions, and plan activities and exercises to successfully engage students. They also understand that not all students learn the same way and have different pedagogical techniques planned.
Teaching is important to me because I believe in the true value of self and group improvement. Life is an uphill challenge to better yourself and the environment in which you live. With improvement in mind, who could be more important than the teachers who construct and facilitate that improvement? The special area of improvement that I focus on is physical education. Physical education is crucial in the development of an individual who wishes to live a long healthy, and prosperous life. Physical education shapes the mind and body through social interaction, physical activity, real world experiences, and most importantly the opportunity to challenge yourself and test your own limits.
Physical education provides a variation of motor skills aimed to enhance the physical, mental, social and emotional development. The obesity statistics of 2009 quantified that childhood obesity rates have more than tripled since 1980 and in addition to concerns regarding chronic diseases, overweight and obesity incidences have even led to poorer levels of academic achievement (Taras & Potts-Datema, 2005). The education world has been greatly influenced by rapidly changing technology and the increasing availability of information. Schools have advanced by leaps and bounds when it comes to incorporating technology into the learning environment, however, many more advances need to be made. In all areas of the country, educators are trying to help students keep up with technology, but there are more changes that are essential for preparing the next generation for the future.
‘Beyond 2012 – outstanding physical education for all’ makes recommendations for schools and the Department for Education to secure the quality of PE in schools and draws out improvements made to PE and sport over the last four years. The Department of Education are looking on making improvements which have generated from the London Games in 2012. They are hoping to make a new strategy for PESS to help pupils become more engaged in sporting activities in their school curriculum. The Government are advising class teachers to raise their expectations by setting more challenging and competitive PE lessons, so pupils increase their performance to a higher level. Also, to engage them in regular and high intensity activities for the full period they have been given in their timetable. As previous studies have shown, when schools were visited, teachers set activities that were too easy for children which led to boredom and lack of motivation and had no planned extra curriculum activities for the pupils. However, schools with the best PE provision had excellent PE lessons with extra curriculum hours set up for them. In 2014, there was a funding of £360,000 to train primary teachers to specialise in PE. This was to ensure children developed ‘a sporting habit for life’. Technology in education is a touchy subject in the United States. Many parents believe that technology will only hurt their child in future, while some believe that technology will help their child. Parents have to be open and must allow themselves, to see what is happening before they make their decision.
Technology properly used in the classroom has many advantages to a student’s learning. Technology can help students become more involved in their own learning process, which is not seen in the traditional classroom. It allows them to master basic skills at their own rate rather than being left behind. Teachers and students alike can connect to real life situations by using technology in the classroom; this can also help to prepare students for real world situations. Technology can be used to motivate students as well as to offer more challenging opportunities. It can also be used as a visualization tool to keep students interested in the subject that is being taught. When technology is used effectively, students have the opportunity to develop skills that they may not get without the use of technology (Cleaver, 2011). Assessing and monitoring students is easier on the teacher because of the ability to use technology in the classroom. When technology is used correctly it offers limitless resources to a classroom atmosphere.
The second step in developing an engaging lesson is to focus on the instructional strategies used to help the students understand the material. It is at this point, the teacher decides what activities they will use to help address the “big ideas” or the “essential questions”.
