The United States has come a long way since the early debates on public schools first began. The responsibility for education has shifted from local control to state control. Today, focus is coming from the federal government and national organizations to regulate standards. There is a shocking level of debate concerning the topic of early childhood education. Many people question how much formal learning is needed or beneficial for very young children. A variety of studies have shown, however, that some form of education, whether it is in a formal school environment or an informal environment in the home, will significantly benefit children by the time they reach traditional school ages. Children are better prepared to learn, and are better behaved. It is essential to understand the development of early childhood educational concepts and procedures. Early childhood education is the beginning of academic careers for children. Early childhood education not only benefits children, but also their families, and their communities. Improved academic performance and increased economic savings demonstrate the advantages of high-quality early childhood education. Children who attended early childhood education programs such as Head Start, for example, were more advanced in skills such as following directions, problem-solving, and participating in activities. We investigated the Early Learning Content Standards and how they aligned with the kindergarten content standards. Our investigation will look at preschool-aged students who have gained this preschool knowledge prior to kindergarten and the negative or positive affects it has on their school career. Does it have an impact on their initial school year? Researching the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment Data on students currently in kindergarten and first grade, and determining who did and did not attend pre-school, will give us information on the students polled. Research states the social-emotional standards in preschool tie directly to kindergarten readiness and, if a child attends preschool, they will be exposed to the social-emotional content standard. The Early Learning Assessment given in preschool is the formative assessment component of Ohio's comprehensive early childhood assessment system called Ready for Kindergarten and is directly tied to the kindergarten readiness assessment that we pulled data information from. I am a firm believer that the quality of the child care directly affects the child’s development in the classroom. By eliminating the need for competing preschools to continue to improve their curriculum and to remain relevant in the field of early childhood education, we risk falling into the same trap K-12 education has fallen into. In other words, individual classroom freedom will be lost when teachers are forced to follow the governments blanket and mandatory regulations. Seventeen to nineteen percent of the fifty percent of children who are in early education programs are in head start. Head start was created in 1965 and is the largest financed early education in the United States. Although many say that head start is a great tool to get students ready for school there are some mixed evidence on both of it. Head start has not shown any improvement on the math skills. There is only a limited research on the impact of making a teacher and student relationship. It has shown that it helped with the students who have special needs on their attention abilities. Head Start and Early Head Start are comprehensive child development programs which serve children from birth to age five, pregnant woman and their extended families. They are child-focused programs that have the overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young children in low-income families. . These programs try to prepare young children intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically for their future educational and social endeavors. ( U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2002).. The programs prepare the parent(s) to be supportive in the endeavor. Head Start has the philosophy that parents are a child's first and most influential teacher. The Head Start program is beneficial to early learning.
Early childhood education is important since 90% of a child’s brain develops by the age of 3. Early childhood education can set young children on a good path. But there is an unfair advantage that makes receiving this education, simpler for higher income families. At a young age, lower income students are shown to have lower language skills than higher income students. They are also shown to not be as ready for school as kids from higher income families. Preschool or daycare can also help expose kids to numbers and words. Children from high class families are exposed to 45 million words by the age of 4. Children from low class families are only exposed to 13 million though. Good quality childcare is expensive and many families do not see the importance. The modern early childhood curriculum refers to the experiences gathered throughout a child’s infancy and beyond. It incorporates everyday interactions with family members within a wide spectrum of environments. Such interactions can be spontaneous or structured however, it is important that they are established within a supportive, safe and nurturing setting in order for the child to flourish in terms of their mental and physical ability ( O’Hagen,and Smith (1998). We refer to such a curriculum as Child centered as equal emphasis must be made on the child’s learning through out infancy as it is within a formal education setting.
